The next-gen Mahindra Thar has been spotted testing again in Chennai. It is expected to be officially unveiled at the 2020 Auto Expo with sales starting soon after.
Mahindra produced 700 units of the Thar Signature edition to mark the end of the present-generation of the Thar. A next-gen Mahindra Thar has been long coming and it is expected to debut in its fresh form at the 2020 Auto Expo. Although the Thar has been spotted many times already, we have some fresh spy shots from Chennai of the next-gen Mahindra Thar.
The next-gen Mahindra Thar will take inspiration from the Jeep Wrangler and gets the seven slat grille upfront. Although this test mule comes with a soft top, the next-gen Thar will come with factory fitted hardtop for the first time and it will be bigger in dimensions. It will carry the rugged muscular design and now gets fresh front and rear bumpers. Larger wheel arches will be seen and new body panels will also be made available with the SUV.
Where the changes will be most noticeable are in the interiors. A large touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be expected. Similarly, a new dashboard design, multi-function steering wheel can come on board. The SUV will also get front-facing seats at the rear. Also, the upcoming SUV will come in different wheelbase options so the interior space will also be much better than before.

The next-gen Thar will use the third generation of Mahindra’s body on frame chassis which not only provides rigidity to the car but also a better off-road experience by allowing 10% more wheel articulation. This chassis is used by Scorpio and TUV300 as well. The SUV will get an independent rear suspension and revised front suspension.

The new Thar will use BS6 compliant 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine which will be more fuel-efficient and better in refinement than the out-going model. It is expected to churn out 140 bhp and a peak torque of 300 Nm – an increase from the current 105 bhp and 248 Nm of torque. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual gearbox and availability of an automatic gearbox could be kept as an option.
