Data from various reports show that while the auto sector is going downwards, the segment of big capacity motorcycles, above 500cc, is growing rapidly.
Since 2018, haven’t we seen a lot of premium motorcycles being launched in India? Many mainstream automakers have launched their entry-level premium motorcycles and so have costly brands launched more of their big capacity bikes.
Fresh data from SIAM states that the 500cc and above segment is catching the eyes of Indian buyers. This particular segment has grown from 5,059 units in April this year to 23,577 units in August 2019, by nearly 500%.
From last year, we saw many exciting premium bike launches, including the Royal Enfield, Triumph, Harley Davidson, BMW, Kawasaki and a lot of other brands as well. They have launched bikes starting from 650cc up to 1800cc.

Mainly, Royal Enfield has contributed a lot to this segment with the 650 Twin. Since launched, the Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 6590 have managed to garner more than 2000 sales units per month.
Priced starting at Rs 2.5 Lakhs (ex-showroom), the 650 Twins are the most affordable twin-cylinder motorcycles that you can buy. Both have shown consistent positive growth in the sales while the rest of RE motorcycles have gone down.
Benelli is another brand that entered the 500cc segment with the TRK 502 Adventure motorcycles and the Leoncino 500. It is soon going to launch the 502C power-cruiser, probably by next year.
The primary reason for the sales of big motorcycles to increase is because they are a niche segment. Not every other buyer is going to go for this segment. Only enthusiasts will be looking at big capacity motorcycles and they will still buy it.
