Will The MG eZS SUV Come In Petrol And Petrol-Hybrid Versions As Well?

MG Motors is launching its second SUV, the electric eZS. However, a new report says that the same SUV might also come with internal combustion engines.

MG eZS electric SUV is all set to be launched in India by the end of this year. It will be MG Motors’ second offering in India after the Hector and also the second electric SUV after Hyundai Kona.

In the global markets, MG ZS comes in petrol, petrol-hybrid and electric powertrains. Earlier, in India, we were supposed to get the SUV with an electric powertrain, but now that seems a different story. In recent developments, we got to know that MG is planning two more engines for the SUV.

A leaked registration document shows that MG has imported the Euro-6 versions of ZS SUV with a petrol engine as well as a petrol-hybrid engine. Could be that MG is planning to bring the ZS SUV in other engine options as well.

The document shows that the 1.5 Litre petrol and the 1.0 Litre petrol-hybrid variants have been imported. The petrol unit produces 112 BHP and 150 Nm of peak torque. The petrol-hybrid engine comes with a small battery just like what we have in the Ciaz and the Hector.

Going by the documents, we can say that it is the pre-facelifted model. As of now, MG has not confirmed these developments nor has hinted anything about these details. But going by the strong response that Hector has received, MG might actually consider it.

MG eZS or the ZS, is 4.3m long making it nearly 400mm smaller than the MG Hector. So if the petrol versions come to India, they are likely to go against the likes of Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster, Nissan Kicks and the Kia Seltos.

In terms of prices, the Hector itself competes with the Creta and Seltos. If coming, the ZS might be priced between Rs 10 Lakhs to Rs 13 Lakhs, squarely going against the Nissan Kicks and Renault Duster.

On the other hand, the MG eZS is likely to be priced around 25 Lakhs in a price range near to Hyundai Kona. MG has stated that its electric SUV will offer driving range of 263 kms, with the real world range coming down to nearly 200 kms in global markets. We are sure that in India, we will be getting ever higher range.

The eZS comes with a 44.5 kWh battery packing, that produces around 143 BHP and 353 Nm of peak torque. It will be a CKD unit and will be assembled at MG’s plant in Halol, Gujarat.
