If you are a diesel fan then now is the time to buy one of your favorite cars. Also, you will be benefitted from the ongoing festival schemes which will help you save loads of money
The Government is strictly focusing on bringing the new BS6 emission norms by April 2020 and has been pushing more towards the electrification. However, the latter will take time but several car manufacturers like Maruti and new entrant Kia Motors have rolled out the BS6 products.
All the manufacturer have to upgrade both the petrol and diesel engine of their cars and SUVs to BS6 emission norms. And we have mentioned to you that it is easy to upgrade the petrol engines but upgrading the diesel engine to BS6 is a costly affair.
And that is why some manufacturers have decided to boycott upgrading the diesel engine and continue with the petrol engines post-April 2020. Let’s have a look at all the diesel engines which we will miss after the BS6 emission norms kick in.

Tata Revotorq 3-Cylinder Inline Engine
Yes, Tata Motors has decided to discontinue their diesel engine. We are well aware that most of the Tata’s lineup and past history runs on the oil burner so will they stop producing the cars?
Well, the answer is no. They will continue with the diesel engine but only with the big SUVs like the Hexa, Harrier and more. It will be the smaller 1.05-litre unit which will be phased out. This particular engine comes in the Tiago as well as Tigor. Performance-wise, it churns out 68 bhp with a peak torque of 140 Nm. Transmission is handled by a 5-speed manual gearbox for both the cars.
Fiat 1.3L DDiS
Fiat Motors has exited the Indian market but they have been supplying their source of diesel engine for some years now. They are mostly the donor engines and Maruti has been a good recipient of these engines. Sadly, Fiat won’t be upgrading this engine to the BS6 emission standards and it has to be discontinued.
The 1.3-litre, DDiS turbocharged motor is majorly used by Maruti Suzuki. It is available in two tunes – 74 bhp with 190 Nm of torque and 90 bhp with 200 Nm of torque. It is a very peppy engine and gets a 5-speed manual gearbox only. Just recently, it got an AMT gearbox with the Swift.
Maruti In-house 1.5L DDiS Engine
This is the second engine from the manufacturer as the first one, the 0.8-litre, twin cylinder, DDiS 125 used in the Celerio was a huge flop. The sales weren’t as impressive as they expected and finally, Maruti stopped this unit in 2017.
Now, the manufacturers have gone right in every step with the new 1.5L DDiS 225 engine. This unit was first powered in Ciaz and then moved to the Ertiga. It is a BS4 compliant unit.
This engine produces 95 bhp and 225 Nm of torque and is said to have minimal turbo lags. Sadly, even after Maruti put so much efforts and money into the production of this diesel engine, it won’t be upgraded to the latest BS6 emission standard. However, Maruti has said that they will bring back this engine only if the demand rises.

Hyundai 1.4L and 1.6L CRDi Engine
This South Korean manufacturer offers a total of three diesel engine options in the country as of now. The 1.2L which comes with the Grand i10 Nios and Xcent, the 1.4-litre which comes in Elite i20, i20 Active and the lower trims of the Hyundai Verna and Creta and the bigger 1.6L diesel engine which only comes with the higher trims of Verna and Creta. Phew! That’s a lot
The good news is that the smaller 1.2L diesel engine will be continued and the 1.4L and 1.6L engine will be axed out. Both of them will be replaced by a single 1.5L BS6 compliant diesel engine borrowed from the Kia Seltos.
This 1.5L new engine produces 115 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. However, for the next-gen i20, the engine will be the same i.e 1.5L but the power figures will be detuned.
Mahindra mFalcon D75
Almost all the Mahindra cars are SUVs and the KUV100 NXT is no less. Or well, it is a hatchback which gets an SUV stance. Well, knowing that Mahindra’s bread and butter are dependent on the diesel engines, hence, they can’t afford to lose out on the diesel and switch to the petrol engines.
However, what they will do is discontinue the smaller 1.2L, three cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine that is only seen with the KUV100 NXT. This engine produces 77 bhp along with 190 Nm of peak torque and comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox only.
They also have released an official statement that they will not upgrade this engine to latest BS6 emission norms. Except this, all the engines whether it is the mHawk and CRDe will see the light post BS6. We are not sure if the DiCR which comes in the 2.5L capacity will be upgraded or not.

Volkswagen 1.5-litre TDI
It was in 2014 when Volkswagen brought in the punchy 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine to the Polo. This engine is available in two sets of tune – 89 bhp with 230 Nm of torque and 110 bhp with 250 Nm of torque. The latter is only available with the Polo GT TDI and is also powered in the Rapid and Vento.
This particular engine also caught the eyes of the media when it was caught in the diesel gate scandal. The cars affected in this called for a performance-related issue. However, ask any Volkswagen owner who owns this diesel engine, they will always appreciate the power figures in this.
Renault 1.5L K9K
The specific 1.5L K9K engine is mutually shared by Nissan and Renault both and is available in various sets of tune. The 65 bhp with 160 Nm of torque, 85 bhp with 200 Nm of torque and the larger 110 bhp with 245 Nm of peak torque.
The diesel engine the Nissan cars stick with Micra, Sunny, Terrano and Kicks while in Renault it ranges from Duster to Captur. It is said that the lower tuned engines which make 65 bhp and 85 bhp are quick in acceleration and also provides no turbo lag.
In the European markets, this engine is available in Euro-6 compliant which is equivalent to the BS6 engine. Bringing it down in the country would be an expensive affair. Now, it’s up to the time and we see how the petrol variant of all the Renault and Nissan cars perform in the market.
