Maserati has teased a heavily camouflaged, mid-engined prototype undergoing testing on the streets of Modena. The Italian manufacturer says the prototype vehicle is being used to develop its latest powertrain, which will feature in its forthcoming production vehicles from May 2020.
The tets mule appears to be a modified version of the Alfa Romeo 4C, sporting a wider front and rear track, enormous engine intakes and oversized alloy wheels squeezed under a set of flared wheel arches. However, the prototype doesn’t preview the styling of any of Maserati’s future products and is being used purely as a testing bed for the new drivetrain.

Maserati hasn’t confirmed any details on the mule’s powertrain, but it’s expected to be testing a version of the firm’s new “Maserati Blue” hybrid-electric powertrain that is due to appear under the bonnet of the Ghibli executive saloon next year. When it goes on sale in mid-2020, it will be the first ever electrified Maserati.

However, another future power unit which could be undergoing testing is Maserati’s planned all-electric powertrain, which will eventually feature in the firm’s all-new replacement for the GranTurismo in May 2020. Maserati has already confirmed that its new sports car will feature a hybrid powertrain from launch, with the electric model following in later in its production cycle.
Maserati has confimred its all-electric powertrain will feature three electric motors, all-wheel-drive and a torque vectoring system – while promising short charge times, limited cabin intrusion and a long driving range.
