Skoda Kamiq Spotted Testing in India for the First Time!

Skoda will however bring an Indian-ised version of the international-spec Kamiq here in India which have a little longer wheelbase and some styling changes.

We have already told you that Skoda is working on a midsize SUV that they will bring to India. However, that will be previewed only in concept form at the 2020 Auto Expo before going on sale in 2021. This Skoda midsize SUV will be derived from the Kamiq and interestingly, the Skoda Kamiq has been spotted testing in India for the first time. The Kamiq is Skoda’s smallest SUV yet, and the spotted test-mule seems to be a European-spec model.

Essentially, the Kamiq is built on Volkswagen’s MQB-AO platform and it is a Hyundai Creta rival. However, for India, the midsized SUV will be built on an Indian-ised MQB AO IN platform. Skoda hasn’t named this SUV for India yet but it is expected to have a slightly longer wheelbase than the international-spec Kamiq in favour of extra rear seat space. It will likely measure 4.2-4.3m in length.

The overall styling of the SUV will also be largely similar to the international-spec Kamiq but the India-spec model will get some flashier styling elements like greater use of chrome for instance. On the inside, the Kamiq-based SUV will offer the latest from Skoda. A large touchscreen infotainment system is expected to take center stage on dashboard. The test mule was seen with an 8.0-inch touchscreen unit. Skoda is also expected to offer lots of features on its India-spec version of the Kamiq, with elements like a panoramic sunroof being likely.

The SUV will have a five-seat cabin and it will boast of some level of adjustability for the rear seats with reclinable back rests, something that would be largely appreciated in this segment. Skoda hasn’t revealed any details about the powertrain of the India-spec Kamiq. It is expected to be offered with turbo-petrol engines, and there is the also likelihood for a factory-fitted CNG kit as well. There will be no diesel engine on offer though.

This Skoda midsized SUV will be the first product to come out of Volkswagen’s India 2.0 Project. Also, Volkswagen too will have their own version of this midsize SUV soon in India. Later, this MQB AO IN platform will also be used to spawn sedan for these two brands. These upcoming midsized SUVs will not an easy stint in India. They will face competition from the likes of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos as well as upcoming mid-sized SUVs from Toyota and Maruti Suzuki as well.
