Citroen C5 Aircross will make its India debut sometime in 2020 and it will establish the Citroen brand in India just like Hector and Seltos did it for MG and Kia.
The year 2019 saw two new brands enter the Indian market – Kia and MG Motors. Come 2020, there will be another new carmaker entering the Indian market and that is Citroen. Citroen announced their plans of entering India back in April 2019 with the C5 Aircross. The car will be unveiled in India sometime in 2020. Meanwhile, the C5 Aircross has now been spotted testing on our roads without any camouflage.
Citroen brings something to India that we have not quite seen before. There’s nothing that quite looks like it on the road. The design is very modern and butch. Like all other new cars in India, the C5 Aircross boasts of a split headlight design upfront and even a split grille to go along with the headlights. The C5 Aircross is based on Groupe PSA’s EMP2 platform which has spawned various other models in various markets.
In terms of dimensions, the C5 Aircross is right up there with its rivals in the mid-size SUV segment. Internationally, the C5 Aircross comes with the option of two diesel and petrol engines. There’s a 1.2-litre petrol engine with 130PS and 230Nm of torque and then there’s a 1.6-litre unit with 181PS and 250Nm of torque. As for the diesel engines, there’s a 1.5 liter unit with 131PS and 300Nm of torque and a bigger 2.0 liter unit 170PS and 400Nm of torque. All these engines send power only to the front wheels, being mated to either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic transmission.

On the inside, the C5 Aircross is as radical as it on the outside. The design language is very fresh and unique in its segment. In terms of features, it gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, an 8-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, panoramic sunroof, front and rear parking sensors, and hands-free parking. These features are also expected to make it to India when the SUV is launched.

The C5 Aircross will be an important car for Citroen in India as it will establish the brand here, just as Hector did for MG and Seltos did for Kia. It will be launched via the CKD route and will be assembled at Citroen’s facility in Tiruvallur, Chennai. Citroen will only rollout a made-in-India model from the facility in 2021. Besides, Citroen is also looking forward to introducing other models in India. Even the DS 7 Crossback was spotted testing in India sometime ago in September.
