Datsun has filed a trademark application for a new car called the Magnite which we are guessing a is a sub-4m SUV, considering that Renault has one in the pipeline too.
Datsun has been going through a tough time globally as its struggling to generate significant sales numbers. The last time Datsun was in news was when they decided to pull out of some countries. They are however going to continue to operate in India, but even in India, Datsun has been struggling with its sales numbers. In an attempt to shake things up, Datsun might have a brand new product lined up for India in the next few months. We know this from a new trademark application that Datsun has filed for a car called the Magnite.
We are guessing that this new car will be a sub-4m SUV. It makes most sense for Datsun to bring out a sub-4m SUV as that is the best-selling segment in the country right now. A product in this space might just help Datsun with their sales in the country. Also, Renault too is developing a sub-4m SUv (code named HBC) for India that will debut sometime in 2020. The Datsun Magnite, if its a sub-4m SUV will be based on the same platform as Renault HBC.
Like the HBC, the Magnite will be underpinned by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance’s CMF-A platform. It will most likely be powered by the same 1.0 liter petrol engine that does duty on the Renault Triber. Alternatively, Datsun could even plonk a turbocharged version of the same engine as well. Currently, the 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine makes 72PS of power and 96Nm of torque in the Triber.

The Magnite will perhaps not see any diesel engine as Renault has decided that their 1.5 liter diesel engine will be discontinued when the BS-6 norms kick in. There are not much details about the Datsun Magnite at this moment but we expect that Renault’s version of the sub-4 metre SUV will debut first in mid-2020 followed by Datsun’s SUV by late-2020. We also expect that the Magnite will be borrowing several parts from the Renault group to keep costs down.

The sub-4 metre Datsun SUV is likely to be priced from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 8 lakh. Rivals include the Hyundai Venue, the upcoming facelifted Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Ford EcoSport, and the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. Moreover, other manufacturers like Volkswagen, Toyota and Kia are also eyeing the sub-compact SUV space to boost sales in the country.
