Is Maruti Planning To Bring A New EV Named Futuro E?

Images of a patent filed by Maruti under the name of Futuro E has surfaced up. Is it an electric vehicle based on the Maruti S-Presso?

Maruti Suzuki recently confirmed that the WagonR EV would not be available for private buyers anytime soon. The Electric WagonR was earlier slated to be launched by early 2020 for both private and commercial buyers but will now come only for the latter.

Maruti has cleared that it plans to launch EVs in India but when the government initiatives and better infrastructure are in place. Now, IAB has leaked a patent of Maruti Futuro E, registered in India. This might be a smaller EV than the WagonR that Maruti has planned.

If you all remember, Maruti showcased the Future-S concept at the Auto Expo. This later went in production form and is now the S-Presso. Reports suggest that the Maruti Futuro could actually be an electric version of the S-Presso.

Since Maruti S-Presso follows an SUV-type styling, the Maruti Futuro EV could be something to watch out for. It will be a bit more affordable than the WagonR EV, which is most likely to be priced around Rs 11-12 Lakhs. If the Futuro comes in, it will use the same battery and electric motor from the WagonR EV.

Talking about the WagonR EV, it is most likely to have a driving range of around 200 kms. The real-world driving range as claimed is down to 130 kms. Both the EVs will be capable of using fast chargers, which should charge up to 80% in just 40-50 minutes.

That’s not it. Maruti is also planning to develop an electric MPV, which will be based on the Ertiga. Besides the WagonR EV, there is no such confirmation on the Electric MPV and Futuro. Coming Auto Expo 2020, we will get clear details about the same.

Other than Maruti, Tata Motors and Mahindra are planning to launch their electric vehicles as well. From Tata, we will be seeing the Nexon EV this month. Mahindra is likely to showcase or launch the KUV 100 EV at the 2020 Auto Expo.
