Skoda Superb Facelift India Launch in May; Kodiaq Petrol to Come by Late 2020!

Post April 2020, the current versions of the Skoda Superb and Kodiaq will be discontinued in India until the Superb facelift and Kodiaq petrol are re-launched with new BS-6 engines.

Skoda India has a very important year lined up ahead of them with as many as four new launches from the carmaker in 2020. We recently came to know that the Karoq will be launched in India in April and now we have come to know that the Skoda Superb facelift will see its India launch in May 2020. Zac Hollis, Director – Sales, Service & Marketing, Skoda Auto India, has confirmed the development via Twitter. The Superb is Skoda’s flagship sedan in India and the facelift is arriving with several cosmetic revisions and major upgrades to the interiors.

As for the new 2020 Superb, it gets new full LED Matrix headlamps, the first for any Skoda car. The headlamp cluster itself is sleeker than before and has new detailing as well. The air dam on the bumper now stretches across the entire width of the car and also houses the newly designed LED fog lamps. Also, the signature butterfly grille gets a wider chrome band around it. At the rear, the Skoda logo has been substituted with the SKODA lettering written in bold.

On the inside, the Skoda Superb facelift has a new virtual cockpit instrument cluster, and VW’s latest infotainment system. The infotainment screen has been slightly redesigned and it also has new chrome and other trim designs around the cabin. Features like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, three-zone climate control, ambient lighting, powered front seats, sunroof, park assist as well as powered tailgate will be carried over from the current sedan.

The big news for the Skoda Superb facelift is however what’s under the hood. The current-gen Superb is powered by two engines – there’s a 1.8L TSI and a 2.0L TDI engine. Both of these engines will be discontinued post the BS-6 norms. That means the current version of the Superb will be discontinued from April, 2020 until the new car is launched in May. With the facelift, Skoda will launch the Superb with a new 2.0L TSI petrol engine in India. It produces 190 bhp and 320 Nm of torque and it is expected to come mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox.

The Kodiaq will be discontinued post April 2020 until its re-launched with a new petrol engine towards the end of 2020.

In another tweet, Zac Hollis also confirmed that the Kodiaq with the BS-6 petrol engine will be launched towards the end of 2020. In fact, post April 2020, the Kodiaq will be discontinued until its launched again with the petrol engine towards the end of the year. That’s because the diesel engine in the Kodiaq wouldn’t see the BS-6 upgrade either. Skoda Auto Volkswagen India is planning to ditch diesel engines for the short term, at least for 2020, but will bring them back if they see sufficient demand for diesel engines.

The current-gen Superb is priced  from Rs 26 lakh while the Kodiaq is priced from Rs 33 lakh (ex-showroom India). Expect the updated BS6-compliant models to cost more than the BS4 versions. The Superb facelift locks horns with the Volkswagen Passat, Toyota Camry Hybrid and the Honda Accord Hybrid, while the Kodiaq petrol will go up against the Honda CR-V and upcoming Tiguan Allspace.
