Which Cars Will Be Discontinued Because Of The BS-6 Norms?

Due to the upcoming BS-6 norms, many cars will be discontinued by April 2020 or already have been. Here is the complete list of the cars that will be axed.

The BS-6 emission norms are supposed to kick in from April 2020, which will be stricter than the BS-4 norms. Our Government skipped the BS-5 norms and directly went to a higher level. The BS-4 norms were introduced in 2017.

A lot of manufacturers have decided to discontinue some of their models, because of these norms. The cost of upgradation from BS-4 cars to BS-6 cars is getting costly and especially for cars with old engines or those who are not generating great sales numbers.

Here is the complete list of cars that will be discontinued or have been discontinued already, because of the BS-6 norms:

Maruti Suzuki

All Diesel Cars

Maruti is going to discontinue all of its diesel cars post BS-6 norms. As of now, only the Ertiga and Ciaz get the new 1.5 Litre DDiS 225 diesel engine. Rest of them, come with the age-old 1.3 Litre diesel engine, which is sourced from Fiat. All the hatchbacks, sedans and SUVs will be only-petrol models post-April 2020.

2017-Maruti-S-Cross

Although, Maruti has also hinted that some of the models like Ciaz, XL6, S-Cross and Vitara Brezza might get the new 1.5 Litre diesel engine with BS-6 compliance. However, it would not happen before the end of 2020. So, for a couple of months, buyers will have to do without any diesel cars from Maruti.

Mahindra

KUV100 Diesel

BS6 Diesel Engine

Mahindra is discontinuing the diesel variant of KUV100, its smallest offering. The KUV is a micro-SUV which comes in the Rs 5-8 Lakhs range. It gets a 1.2 Litre turbo-charged diesel engine, that produces 77 BHP and 190 Nm of peak torque, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The SUV with the size of a hatchback is one of the least selling models in the Mahindra lineup.

Xylo, Nuvo Sport and Verito

Mahindra Xylo, Nuvo Sport and Verito will finally be discontinued, after it being a flop show for the past two years. Actually, the sales of NuvoSport and Verito never kicked off in the market. All these three vehicles were something different for the market. Like Xylo was a direct competitor for the Ertiga and was slightly bigger as well. NuvoSport was one of the earliest sub-compact SUVs in India. Verito was also amongst the earliest sub-4 metre sedans in India.

Renault

All Diesel Cars

Renault has decided to discontinue all of its diesel cars post BS-6 norms. As of now, there is no official word on whether the Renault Lodgy will be discontinued in India. There are chances, though. The tough off-roader Duster will sadly be available only with petrol engines post-April. The Duster is a well-known car in the off-roading scenario.

Volkswagen

Ameo

Volkswagen bought the Ameo to India, thinking it could work well in the infant sub-4 metre sedan segment. Just recently, the Xcent and the new generation Dzire had also been launched. However, things did not work out well for Ameo since the start. No doubt, it was a good car with many new features and a powerful diesel engine. However, its german relations meant heavy maintenance charges, which dissuaded people from the sedan.

Volkswagen Polo Facelift Review

All Diesel Cars

Volkswagen is also going to discontinue all of its diesel engines post April 2020. So, cars like Polo, Vento, Tiguan and Passat will only come with petrol engines. While VW is planning to increase its market share with new SUV launches, it might get into trouble once their lovable diesel engines are being discontinued.

Tata Motors

Zest

2014 Tata Zest Front Right Quarter

Tata Zest was launched prior to the Tigor, which is now its better selling compact sedan. The sales of Zest have always been low in the market, but later it was picked up in the cab fleet cars. It packs a punchy engine and a unique look, but at that time, Tata was still reeling from its reliability problems.

Bolt

Same is the case with the Bolt. It was launched at the time when Tata was not known for its reliability. With the launch of Tiago and Nexon, Tata Motors was cleared of all its doubts. Interestingly, Tata Bolt comes with a turbocharged petrol engine which produces 90 BHP. Despite being a good looking car and having spacious interiors, it was never thought of a new car but something made from the Indica Vista.

Safari Storme

Ahh, the good’ol Safari brand name will come to stop. Actually, all the units of Safari Storme over the country, are limited and many cities no longer have it. Safari was the first Indian SUV which was considered a brute and a car that could be taken everywhere. It was a complete auto enthusiast’s mole. With time and increasing competition, the sale of Safari went down.

Tiago and Tigor Diesel

Tata Tiago and Tigor will only come in the BS6 petrol engine

Tata Motors is also going to discontinue the 1.05 Litre Revotorq diesel engines on the Tiago and Tigor. The company says that the cost of developing these engines is high and this particular segment has enough demand for petrol cars. For Tiago it may seem fine, but not for the Tigor.

Toyota

Toyota Etios And Etios Liva

Toyota will discontinue the Etios and Etios Liva next year. Both of the cars have already exhausted their life cycles, without any upgrades or facelifts received recently. Etios received a good response in its early days because it was a reliable and very spacious sedan, costing under 10 Lakhs. In the past years, both of them have become an otherwise hit in the commercial vehicles market.

Hyundai

Grand i10

After the launch of Grand i10 Nios, Hyundai hinted that it might cut off the regular Grand i10. Grand i10 is still one of the most-feature equipped cars in its segment. Right now, it only comes in petrol and CNG configurations in only two variants.

Xcent

Similarly, with the launch of Hyundai Aura, the manufacturer will discontinue the Xcent. Although, it is a popular choice in the cab fleet market, so Hyundai might just continue the Xcent Prime with the petrol-CNG option, only for commercial sale. The upcoming Aura will be based on Xcent, but will be slightly bigger and will have more features.
