Tata Motors would be unveiling the Nexon EV in Mumbai in a couple of days. Battery and Powertrain

As already mentioned, the Nexon EV will debut Tata’s new Ziptron technology. Like every other electric vehicle in the world, the Nexon EV will also have its batteries mounted under the floor which should help it reduce its center of gravity. That will in turn aid handling and also reduce body roll as compared to the petrol and diesel powered Nexon. The Nexon EV will feature a 28.8kWh battery pack that powers a 95kW/254Nm motor – the power figure converts roughly to 129hp.

Range and Charging

The Nexon EV is expected to have a range of about 300 km, based on the Modified Indian Driving Cycle (MIDC). It will also come with fast charging capabilities and it is expected to gain about 80 percent charge in one hour with a DC fast charger. It will however take about 8-9 hours to top up the batteries entirely using a standard AC charger. The Nexon EV will also feature a hill-assist function and an energy regeneration feature that will work while the vehicle is in coasting mode. Tata would also be offering an 8 year/1,60,000km warranty as standard. That’s unheard of with combustion engine cars.

Dimensions and Ground Clearance

In terms of dimensions, the Nexon EV will measure 3,995mm in length, 1,811mm in width and 1,607mm in height. The Nexon EV will be based on the facelift of the standard Nexon that is due pretty soon as well. While it will continue to feature the same 2,498mm wheelbase as the pre-facelift Nexon, the EV will sit slightly lower to the ground with a ground clearance figure of 209mm instead of the standard SUV’s 215mm. This is because the Nexon EV features an unique suspension setup when compared to the standard Nexon. At the rear, the SUV will feature a semi-independent suspension with torsion beam setup.

Variants and Features List

The standard Nexon is a pretty well kitted car and the EV is expected to be high on the features list as well. The Nexon EV will most likely be offered in two variants and the top-spec variant is expected to get features such as automatic full-LED headlamps with LED daytime running lamps, power folding wing mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a power sunroof, push-button start with a smart key and a wearable key, a Harman-sourced infotainment system with a rear view camera and park assist feature, eight speakers and Tata’s ConnectNext connectivity suite with voice command and other app-based features. It will also feature automatic climate controls and dual-tone exterior paint combinations.

And its Rivals are

By the time the Nexon EV is laucnhed, the only two other electric vehicles in the country would be the Hyundai Kona and the MG ZS EV. Now the Nexon EV is expected to be priced around Rs 15 lakhs and both the Hyundai Kona (Rs 23.72-23.90 lakh) and the MG ZS EV (Rs 22 lakhs, expected) are priced way above the Nexon EV. Tata is also working on the Altroz EV which is again expected to be priced around the Rs. 12 lakh mark. Perhaps the only direct rival that the Nexon EV is expected to have as of now is the upcoming Mahindra eXUV300. Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki’s Futuro-E concept, which will preview a small EV SUV, will make its debut at the 2020 Auto Expo.
