This new 7-seater SUV from Maruti Suzuki will be based on the forth-generation Vitara that is sold abroad and it is expected to make its India debut in 2021.
Maruti Suzuki is India’s largest carmaker and yet they have never taken a share in the 7-seater SUV space. Now, Maruti Suzuki is finally thinking of plugging that gap in their India lineup. According to reports, Maruti Suzuki’s 7-seater SUV in question will spawn under the Vitara family. It will rival the likes of the new Mahindra XUV500 and the upcoming Tata Gravitas in India.
The Vitara name was first used in early 2000s with the XL7 Grand Vitara by Maruti Suzuk in India. It was the third generation of the Grand Vitara that was brought to India and it was a five-seater SUV. And then we had the Vitara Brezza which has been a best seller in its segment for long. The upcoming 7-seater SUV is touted to be based on the fourth-generation Vitara that is sold in markets abroad.
This new 7-seater SUV from Maruti Suzuki could be underpinned by the Heartect platform. The 5-seater version of the Vitara that is sold abroad is 4,175 mm long, 1,775mm wide, and sits 1,610mm high while the wheelbase is 2,500mm. While its definitely larger than the Vitara Brezza sold in India, the step up in dimensions are not by a large margin though.

Internationally, the forth-generation Vitara is offered with four engine options – a 1.0-litre Boosterjet petrol, a 1.4-litre Boosterjet petrol, 1.6 petrol, and the 1.6-litre DDIS. All these engines either come mated to a 5-speed or 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Coming back to India, we can expect the 1.5-litre petrol engine and the in-house-developed 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine. Yes, Maruti Suzuki will bring back their diesel engines in the BS-6 era. Also, going by Maruti Suzuki’s trend, the 7-seater SUV could be using some mild-hybrid technology as well.

As said earlier, this 7-seater SUV is still sometime away and it will debut in 2021. We will have more details about this SUV and a more precise launch timeline in the days to come. Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki is also working on an all-electric SUV, which might go by the name Futuro-E.
