Volkswagen Teases New Polo-based Compact SUV Called Nivus!

The Volkswagen Nivus is based on the MQB AO platform and is a crossover based on the Polo hatchback. VW could bring it to India considering their SUV centric strategy and the presence of the MQB AO IN platform.

Volkswagen has dropped a new teaser of an upcoming crossover which has been named the ‘Nivus’. This compact SUV is based on the Polo hatchback and it was earlier known as the T-Sport. It sits below the T-Cross in Volkswagen’s lineup and the car will first be introduced in the Brazilian market after which it will be introduced in Europe.

Although the teaser image does not reveal much, we can say it looks distinctly different from the Polo. The face seems to have been completely redesigned with a new grille and headlamps and at the rear, the SUV gets a very beautiful coupe-like sloping roof line. The rear also gets LED tail lamps (the tail lamp detailing looks quite similar to the Seltos) which extend to the tail gate and there are roof rails as well to go with its crossover tag.

But what is it that makes us interested in the Nivus? The Volkswagen Nivus is based on the MQB AO platform which has been specifically made by Volkswagen for emerging markets, but as we told you earlier, it will be the Brazilian market that will get the car first. The MQB A0 also underpins the new-gen Polo that’s on sale internationally. In fact, this compact SUV will have the same 2,560mm wheelbase as the Polo, but it will be 90mm shorter than the T-Cross.

In India, Volkswagen uses an India specific MQB AO IN platform to underpin a whole bunch of cars for our market. The MQB AO IN platform is a derivative of the MQB AO platform and the Nivus being based on this platform, we cannot rule out that the Nivus for the country. Volkswagen anyway has been on a roll with SUVs for the Indian market with the T-Roc, Tiguan AllSpace and T-Cross based compact SUV hitting our market by 2020.

The Volkswagen Nivus is expected to use a 115hp, 1.0 TSI turbo-petrol engine which can be had with either a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox. Although VW hasn’t specifically mentioned about this car coming to India, the Nivus perfectly fits the bill for the Indian market. The Nivus crossover coupe will be launched in Brazil in mid-2020 and we wait to hear from Volkswagen India whether it plans to bring this car to India.
