Next-gen Hyundai i20 will make its India debut in June 2020

The next-gen Hyundai i20 will see an evolution in terms of design and will get much more features along with a new 1.0 turbo-petrol engine with a 7-speed DCT gearbox.

Hyundai has quite a few cars lined up fro launch in 2020. They are going to kick start the year with all new 2020 Creta at the Auto Expo 2020, followed by its market launch. Hyundai will also be rolling out a slew of BS6 versions of its current models along with facelifts for a couple of cars. That aside, the second most important car launch from Hyundai this year will be the next-gen i20 hatchback. We can now confirm that the next-gen Hyundai i20 will be launched in India in June 2020.

The next-gen i20 will be an evolution of the current design, unlike the next-gen Creta. There will be several new details on the new i20 but the overall look will remain quite similar to the outgoing model. The new car will get wider iteration of Hyundai’s trademark cascading grille design, which will also see the upward-swooping headlamps merge with it. The new i20 will stick to being a sub-4m car to enjoy the required tax benefits in the India market. You can also expect lots of new features and creature comforts along with Hyundai BlueLink connected car technology.

Under the hood, the next-gen i20 will come with a BS6 complaint version of the current 1.2 liter petrol engine. It is expected to produce 83 bhp and 113 Nm of torque, just like the current iteration of the engine. There are also talks of Hyundai introducing the 1.0 liter turbo-petrol engine along with the 7-speed DCT gearbox in the i20. As for the diesel engine, the i20 will get a new 1.5 liter diesel engine (of course in BS6 guise) in place of the current 1.4 liter unit. It is expected to produce about 90 bhp. This is the detuned version of the same 1.5-litre powerplant that is seen on the Kia Seltos and will be on duty on the next-gen Hyundai Creta and the facelifted Verna in India.

Going by some spy shots seen earlier, Hyundai is going to make the new i20 even upmarket with a fully digital instrument console. One dial on the left is for the speed and the other one is for RPM. The console seems to be inspired by the new Creta which has been recently launched in China. It will also receive a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as connectivity features. Automatic climate control, Wireless charging, multiple airbags, start/stop button and several other features which its competition lacks. It will also get a new multifunction steering, similar to those on other newer Hyundai models.

Although the launch of the next-gen i20 is still a few months away, Hyundai will still update the 1.2 liter petrol engine for BS6 compliance in the current-gen car. The diesel engine will not be updated. That means the i20 will soldier on with a sole petrol engine post April 2020 until the next-gen car arrives.

Internationally, the next-gen i20 will also come with a performance-oriented N variant that gets chassis and engine modifications along with suspension upgrades, performance brakes and a more direct-ratio steering setup. The new Hyundai i20 N is likely to come with a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine with an output of as much as 200hp, which will make it much more powerful than the standard car. However, its unclear if Hyundai will bring the N version of the i20 to India.
