Maruti Suzuki has reportedly commenced its work on bringing the new generation Gypsy or the Jimny to India. It is expected to be seen in flesh, next month.
With Maruti discontinuing the Gypsy, it has left a void space in the heart of off-road enthusiasts. The most-affordable and amongst the most capable off-roaders might head over to India in a new avatar soon.
Now, fresh reports confirm that Suzuki is indeed bringing the Jimny to India next year and might rename it as Gypsy. It will get certain mechanical changes to differentiate from the global-model but might look the same.
Reports suggest that the upcoming mini-SUV will be a bit longer than the global-model but will still be a sub-4 metre car. It would not be as rugged as the retro-cool Gypsy, but will be a much modern-looking off-roader. It will be available in the soft-top as well as hard-top versions, but only in a 5-door setup.

Expect the Suzuki Jimny-based SUV in India to get the same ladder-frame chassis, 4WD system and a low range gearbox for off-roading. Further, you will get chunky tall tires with much higher ground clearance.
The report confirms that Maruti will use the new 1.5 Litre K15B petrol engine on the Jimny, which also comes on Ciaz and Ertiga. A 5-speed manual gearbox and the regular 4-speed AT will come with the Jimny and the AT will come on the top-spec variants.
Features onboard will be the same that come on the Swift and Dzire. You can expect large touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Auto AC, projector LED headlamps, electric ORVMs with turn indicators and much more.

Safety features onboard will include dual-front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and rear-view camera and dual-sensor brake support. It might also come with a differential locking system.
Expect Maruti to price the Jimny in the range of Rs 6-8 Lakhs, similar to the Gypsy. In this price range, you can get other mini-SUVs like the Mahindra KUV100 or the upcoming Tata H2X. Maruti might sell it through the Nexa dealership and this LWB version might be exclusive to India only.
