Tata Altroz scores Five-Star Safety Rating in Global NCAP Crash Test!

The Tata Altroz fared very well at the Global NCAP crash tests with good adult occupant protection and decent child occupant protection. It also gets lots of safety features with a rigid bodyshell.

The Tata Altroz has already impressed us on many fronts, be it with its styling, equipment list or even its drivability. Now, the Tata Altroz has secured a 5-star safety rating at the Global New Car Assessment Programme (Global NCAP) crash tests ahead of its launch on January 22, 2020. Interestingly, this is the first instance of Global NCAP issuing crash test results for a car that’s not on sale yet.

The Altroz is only the second made-in-India car after the Tata Nexon to have scored a full five-star safety rating from Global NCAP. The Altroz was tested for front offset crash test as well as a side-impact test. Global NCAP reports that the Altroz provides good protection for the driver and front passenger’s head, neck and knees, and adequate protection for the chest. The bodyshell was also stable and it was ‘capable of withstanding further loadings’. Overall, the Altroz scored an impressive 16.13 points out of 17 in adult occupant protection.

However, the Altroz did not fare so well on the child occupant protection front. It scored only three-stars and 29 points out of a potential 49. The Altroz provided good protection for the 1.5-year-old child dummy. However, the backrest of the child seat for the 3-year-old child dummy (installed forward-facing with Isofix anchorages) unlatched during the crash and the dummy’s head made contact with the interior. That costed the Altroz quite a few points.

It did not fare very well in the child occupant protection though.

In terms of safety features, the Altroz is very well equipped. These safety features include  dual airbags, ABS with EBD and Corner Stability Control, seatbelt reminder, speed alert system and Isofix anchorages. All this is by standard on all variants of the Altroz. The Altroz is also Tata’s first car to be based on the ALFA architecture and the platform did prove to be quite safe indeed.

Under the hood, the Tata Altroz gets two BS-6 compliant engines – there’s a 1.2-litre, naturally aspirated petrol engine that makes 86bhp and 113Nm; then there’s a 1.5-litre diesel engine which produces 90hp and 200Nm of torque. Both these engines come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox as of now. There are plans of introducing a dual-clutch automatic gearbox in the future as well. The Tata Altroz will rival the likes of the Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Glanza and Honda Jazz. When its launched, it is expected to be priced between Rs. 5-8 lakhs (ex-showroom), thus undercutting its rivals.
