The Tata Sierra Concept has garnered so much positive reaction at the 2020 Auto Expo that it could actually see production. It will surely start life as an EV if it ever goes into production.
The Tata Sierra Concept was one of the biggest highlights of the 2020 Auto Expo. It was only previewed as a concept to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO) – the forerunner of Tata Motors. However, the Sierra Concept has garnered so much of positive reaction, that Tata Motors is now actually considering to make bring out a production version of the same.
The original Tata Sierra from back in the 1990s was inspired from the 1970s Ford Bronco and it was nothing like we had at that time. It was a two-door pickup-based SUV and once you had struggled your way into the back seat, it was an absolute delight. With tons of legroom and a massive pillar-less stretch of glass made for a very unique and pleasurable experience. The iconic window line is instantly recognizable even in the modern Sierra Concept.
Designed by Pratap Bose, the Sierra Concept goes one up over the original Sierra with an all-glass roof, thus offering an expansive 180 degree view above your head. If the Sierra actually makes it to production, Bose has said that they will try to keep the production version of the car true to the concept with the big glass area, the glass roof, and, especially, the electric sliding doors.
The Tata Sierra Concept has been built on the extremely flexible ALFA (same as the Altroz) architecture which means that the Sierra could see life outside of a concept. In fact, Rajendra Petkar, chief technology officer, Tata Motors, sounds keen to get stuck in. “In ALFA, we have a fabulously flexible platform, and though this car looks massive, its 4.3m length will allow us to build it on our new platform.”
The electric sliding rear doors might need some working but Tata could stick to the asymmetrical single-door setup as well. As long as the car is financially viable and costs are kept on check, this could very well see the light of production. The Sierra would definitely start life as an EV and the compact nose and long wheelbase is clearly indicative of that.

However, going further, Tata is also likely to use its other ALFA platform aggregates, some of which haven’t seen the light of day yet. We could thus possibly see a petrol-hybrid version and perhaps a diesel engine under the hood as well. It will then be Tata’s rival for the Creta and one with the X factor and tremendous emotional appeal.

The Sierra is still heavily in the concept stage and Tata will have to come out with another close-to-production car before we can see how the Sierra could actually be in production form. The lighting elements and the certainly the interiors will have to be completely reworked. Pratap Bose is however of the opinion that the seating arrangement can be carried into the production car. Tata insiders have even hinted that replaceable panels could be used on the car’s exterior to add a degree of customisation. The Sierra is still pretty far from production and the earliest by which we could see the Sierra on our roads is perhaps by 2022-2023. Again, that’s only a guess.
