Car Deal of the Day: Hot Mercedes-AMG A35 hatch available on a hot £380 per month deal

From tomorrow, April 1, the original deadline for BS6 cars will commence. This will lead to the death of 25 budget diesel cars in India.

Today, 31st March is the last original date for BS4 cars to be registered. While the government has declared a 10-day extension for sale of BS4 cars, still from tomorrow, the dreaded and saddening BS6 emission norms for petrol and diesel cars will commence.

A lot of the cars that we loved will no longer be available post-April 1. If you are lucky then you might still find a BS4 car at dealerships to buy. However, except Delhi NCR, you can buy and get these BS4 cars registered in the 10-day extension itself.

Most of the cars discontinued include diesel cars. Some of the manufacturers have discontinued these diesel cars due to heavy costs for BS6 change or because they did not feel the need for the transition because of poor sales.

Here is a comprehensive list of 25 diesel cars that will not see the light when BS6 norms come in action:

Maruti Suzuki

1. Swift 1.3 Litre DDis Diesel
2. Baleno 1.3 Litre DDis Diesel
3. Dzire 1.3 Litre DDis Diesel
4. Vitara Brezza 1.3 Litre DDis Diesel
5. S-Cross 1.3 Litre DDis Diesel
6. Ciaz 1.5 Litre DDiS 225 Diesel
7. Ertiga 1.5 Litre DDiS 225 Diesel

Maruti’s ageing 1.3 Litre FCA-sourced DDiS diesel engine has been discontinued, which came on five cars. Also, its recently developed 1.5 Litre unit has also been discontinued. There are chances the latter might make a comeback in the near future.

Tata Motors

1. Tiago 1.05 Litre Revotorq Diesel
2. Tigor 1.05 Litre Revotorq Diesel
3. Bolt 1.3 Litre Revotorq Diesel
4. Zest 1.3 Litre Revotorq Diesel
5. Hexa 2.2 Litre mVaricor Diesel
6. Safari Storme 2.2 Litre mVaricor Diesel

Tata has taken off the smallest 1.05 Litre Revotorq diesel from the Tiago and Tigor. The availability of a diesel engine was one of the highlights of Tiago. Further, the almost non-existent Bolt and Zest lose out their 1.3 Litre diesel engine. The beloved Hexa and Safari have also been discontinued completely due to the BS6 norms. There are chances that Hexa might make a comeback by the end of the year.

Volkswagen

1. Polo 1.5 Litre TDI Diesel
2. Vento Diesel 1.5 Litre TDI Diesel
3. Tiguan 2.0 Litre TDI Diesel
4. Ameo 1.5 Litre TDI Diesel

Volkswagen has discontinued the Polo and Vento diesel, making them all-petrol cars. Polo Diesel was a torquey hatch and because of its compact dimensions, was a driver’s love. The Tiguan has been completely discontinued because it only came with a diesel engine. It is now replaced by a more practical Tiguan All-Space petrol. Lastly, Volkswagen has also discontinued Ameo, as the compact sedan was not garnering required sales. Also, VW has stopped offering its DSG gearbox on Polo and Vento, replaced by a cheaper torque-converter AT.

Toyota

1. Etios 1.4 Litre Diesel
2. Etios Liva 1.4 Litre Diesel
3. Corolla Altis 1.4 Litre Diesel

Toyota has completely discontinued Etios, Etios Liva and Corolla Altis. All these three cars were at the end of their lifecycle in the country. While the sales of Corolla and Etios Liva was never that impressive, Etios was a complete workhorse. In its initial years, it became a hit with the private buyers and towards the end, it went with cab fleet operators.

Skoda

1. Rapid 1.5 Litre TDI
2. Octavia 2.0 Litre TDI
3. Superb 2.0 Litre TDI
4. Kodiaq 2.0 Litre TDI

Skoda and Volkswagen share their engines and that’s why you see the same ones discontinued here as well. The 1.5 Litre TDI was only aboard the Rapid, which will be a petrol-only sedan. Octavia and Superb have been completely discontinued, with the former likely to make a comeback by the end of this year. Kodiaq gets a new petrol engine and its deliveries will commence in May.

Renault

1. Duster 1.5 Litre Diesel
2. Captur 1.5 Litre Diesel
3. Lodgy 1.5 Litre Diesel

Renault has taken its 1.5 Litre diesel engine off the charts. Duster diesel was an enthusiast’s choice which will now get a more powerful turbo petrol engine. As for Lodgy, it has been completely discontinued due to poor sales. There is no official word on Captur, but it has still not received a BS6 upgrade.

Nissan

1. Kicks 1.5 Litre Diesel
2. Terrano 1.5 Litre Diesel

Nissan and Renault cars share their 1.5 Litre diesel engine. As of now, both these SUVs have not gotten BS6 upgrades. There are chances that Kicks might get a BS6 petrol engine, but low chances that Terrano might even pass these norms.

Mahindra

1. KUV100 1.2 Litre Diesel

Mahindra has discontinued the KUV100 1.2 Litre diesel variants, due to poor demand. The manufacturer will also discontinue the existing diesel engines of XUV500 and Scorpio, but sometime later this year. For the time being, these engines are BS6 compliant.
