Government Extends Validity of Vehicle and Driving documents Amidst Lockdown

All vehicle and driving related documents that would have expired after February 1 now remains valid till June 30 due to the coronavirus lockdown.

Amidst the coronavirus lockdown, the Union Government has come up with a relief for all vehicle owners and drivers who’s documents have expired recently or were due for a renewal in the coming days. In an advisory to all states and union territories on March 30, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has extended the validity of documents related to the Motor Vehicles Act and the Central Motor Vehicle Rules till June 30, 2020.

What this essentially means is that validity of fitness certificates, all types of permits, driving licenses, registrations or any other concerned documents whose extension could not be processed during this lockdown will now be extended. This means that all documents that would have expired after February 1 will now remain valid till June 30.

In this lockdown period, the transport offices in all the states are also shut down. In the order, the Ministry has also announced about the ‘Non-use clause facility’ for transport vehicles for suspension of tax liability, which is operational in a number of states by using the VAHAN platform. It says a similar operating procedure may be adopted by remaining states to give relief to commercial vehicles like taxi, bus etc which are non-operational under present circumstances.

Lastly, the Ministry has also added that vehicles involved in the transportation of essential goods and commodities should not be harassed for their documents during this period of lockdown across the country. Its understood that even these vehicles will not be able to renew their documents at this time but all state and union territories have been adviced to ensure hassle-free transportation of such vehicles.

As for registration of new vehicles are concerned, the Supreme Court has passed an order that BS4 vehicles that were brought before the lockdown will be allowed to register within 10 days after the lockdown is lifted. It also applies for Bs4 vehicles bought within this 10-day period after the lockdown is lifted.
