Maruti Suzuki SwiftDiesel Now Officially Discontinued in India!

While we always saw it coming, Maruti Suzuki has now de-listed the diesel variants of the Swift from their website. It is now solely offered with the 1.2L K12B petrol engine.

Maruti Suzuki has recently discontinued the diesel variants of the Swift in India. The Swift was the first model from Maruti Suzuki to come powered by Fiat’s 1.3L Multijet Engine. It was known for its fun-to-drive characteristics while also being very fuel efficient and reliable too. Sadly, diesel engine in the Swift has not been updated to meet the BS6 norms and it is not likely to make a comeback anytime soon.

The 1.3L diesel engine in the Swift produced 75PS of power and 190Nm of torque. In its first two generations, the Swift diesel was only offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox, while in its third generation, Maruti Suzuki even introduced a 5-speed AMT gearbox on the Swift. This Fiat 1.3L engine was also known as the national engine of India and the last of these units were rolled out from Fiat’s Ranjangaon facility on January 23.

The 1.3L diesel engine was particularly very well suited to the Swift’s character and felt best tuned in the Swift. The unit did suffer from some turbo-lag, urging you to work the gears more often when the engine speed dropped below 2000 rpm but when you were past 2000 rpm, the engine pulled really strongly all the way to its 5,000 rpm redline. Combined with its frugal nature, it was one of the most fun-to-drive hatchbacks in the country.

Going ahead, the Maruti Suzuki Swift will only be offered with the 1.2L, naturally aspirated K-Series petrol engine that puts out 83 bhp and 113Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. There are also talks of Maruti Suzuki introducing the more powerful Dualjet petrol engine on the Swift like it recently did the Dzure facelift. The Dualjet petrol engine produces 90 bhp of power.

Maruti Suzuki has also silently updated the SmartPlay Studio infotainment system on the Swift. It now features Android Auto, Apple Carplay and also showcases the live status of the car including distance to empty, average fuel efficiency as well as warnings such as low fuel level. The BS6 Swift currently has a starting price of Rs 5.19 lakh and it competes with the Ford Figo and the Grand i10 Nios. Both the Figo and Nios continue to get diesel powertrains in the BS6 era.
