The First All-Electric AMG Will Be The Mercedes-AMG EQS!

Mercedes is planning on an AMG version of the EQS which will likely be the first all-electric AMG model meant to take on the Porsche Taycan and the Tesla Model S.

Mercedes debuted the EQS Concept at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show which is going to be the flagship model of the EQ family. The production version of the EQS is expected to come out in 2022. Now, we had already reported to you that Mercedes’ performance division, AMG, does have plans of going electric in the future. Mercedes is now planning for an AMG version of the EQS, one that will rival the Porsche Taycan and the Tesla Model S.

The Mercedes-AMG EQS could have over 600 bhp of power with two electric motors placed on each axle. In the world of electric hypercars with 2000bhp, a power figure of 600bhp is rather quite decent but should be enough to take on the Porsche Taycan. That is of course now the benchmark in performance and luxury for electric cars after Porsche bagged these titles for the Taycan at the World Car of the Year 2020.

Coming back to the EQS, the standard car produces 470bhp and 760Nm of torque. Its no slouch either. It can hit naught to 100kph in just 4.7 seconds with a top-speed of more than 200kph. The Mercedes-AMG EQS will certainly be faster and quicker but will most likely retain the 100kWh battery pack of the standard EQS. Mercedes claims the standard EQS has a range of about 700 kms and even with the added performance of the AMG version, it should have a decent enough range still.

To be an AMG, the Mercedes EQS will certainly go through a lot of changes. The EQS might see some weight saving measures along with a stiffer suspension setup. If it has to wear the AMG badge, it will should also look like one and perhaps Mercedes will drop the panamericana grille on the EQS. Its quite exiting to imagine how an AMG-spec EQ car would look like. Talking about looks, the standard EQS is great looker by itself. The carmaker calls it the ‘one bow’ design devoid of seams, creases, and straight lines. And the interiors have been inspired from luxury yachts, says Mercedes.

When the EQS actually hits the market, it will most likely be sold along side the flagship internal combustion S-Class sedan. The AMG version will follow in some more time. Mercedes-AMGs really have been about their glorious engines and their scintillating sound. Its quite hard to imagine the AMG badge on an electric car but such is the road map for the automotive world. And the more important question is how will it match up to the Porsche Taycan. Exciting times ahead, or not?
