Will Honda Launch The City Based Hatchback In India Ever?

Here is rendering on 2020 Honda City hatchback that is styled similar to the new City. Will it ever replace the ageing Jazz in India?

Honda will launch the new generation 2020 City in India by June. Due to the lockdown and coronavirus pandemic, the launch has been delayed. In the South East Asian countries, the new City is already available for sale, in a different version.

In some markets, there is a notchback based on the previous generation City. For the South East Asian markets, Honda is developing a new city based hatchback itself. Here is a rendering of the same, based on the newly launched sedan.

As you can see, the design is exactly the same with major changes to the rear portion. The front grille and headlamp styling remains the same. So does the side portion and alloy wheels. At the back, it gets a rear spoiler Z-shaped LED headlamps and a high boot lip.

Possibly, this one would not be called the City hatchback and might take a completely new name. Also, reports say that it might not be a sub-4-metre hatch, thus ruling out an early possibility for India. If a car is under 4-metre long, there are some tax benefits applicable.

The Thai-spec City gets a 1.0 Litre three-cylinder petrol engine, that produces 120 PS and 200 Nm. The hatch will get the same engine but the power figures will be comparatively lower. We are expecting it to produce around 100-105 BHP and 150-160 Nm of torque.

The Honda City hatchback would not come to India in near future. First of all, we have the Honda Jazz which is set to receive a BS6 upgrade. Also, Honda earlier stated that the city hatchback is focused on South East Asian countries like Thailand.

While Jazz may be towards the end of its life cycle, it still is a stylish hatch. It will soon receive a minor facelift along with BS6 compliant petrol and diesel engines. Due to the lockdown, even its launch has been delayed without further notice.
