It is already common knowledge that the 1.3L diesel engine on the S-Cross has been discontinued as Maruti Suzuki stepped into the BS6 era. In place of a diesel engine, there will be a new 1.5L petrol engine powering the S-Cross and going ahead, the S-Cross will be a petrol-only model. The same treatment was also meted out to the Vitara Brezza with the replacement of the same diesel engine with this new 1.5L petrol engine.

The bigger news is that some dealerships have already unofficially opened bookings for the 2020 S-Cross for a token amount of Rs 11,000. The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross petrol will be offered in three variants – Delta, Zeta and Alpha. The previous base-spec Sigma variant has been discontinued. The Delta variant will be the new base model with the starting price likely expected to be Rs 9.90 lakh for the manual variant. The S-Cross petrol will have the option of manual and automatic gearboxes for all the three variants.

The new BS6 Maruti Suzuki S-Cross petrol will be powered by a BS6 complaint 1.5L, four-cylinder petrol engine that puts out 105hp and 138Nm of peak torque. having ditched the diesel engine, the S-Cross will definitely lose out on its efficiency and torquey nature. However, to compensate for that, Maruti Suzuki will be offering their Smart-Hybrid system on the S-Cross just as they do for the brezza. The system comes with the functionality of torque-boost and idle start-stop which should help the S-Cross retain some of its appeal.

With the new petrol engine, the S-Cross will also be offered with a 4-speed torque converter automatic gearbox for the first time apart from the standard 5-speed manual gearbox. The 2020 S-Cross otherwise remains complete unchanged in terms of looks and interior features. For its price, the S-Cross will rival the petrol versions of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and the Renault Duster. The diesel S-Cross could make a comeback in the future as Maruti Suzuki is expected to update their 1.5L diesel engine to BS6 norms in the future if they see sufficient demand for diesel cars.
