Volkswagen Polo Sells More Than Hyundai i20 And Toyota Glanza In May

Volkswagen Polo is the third best-selling premium hatchback in India this month, overtaking Hyundai i20, Toyota Glanza, Ford Freestyle and Honda Jazz.

Just two weeks before the nationwide lockdown started, Volkswagen launched the BS6 compliant Polo and Vento. Due to the emission norms, Polo lost two of its three engines, including the 1.5 Litre diesel and the 1.2 Litre four-cylinder turbo petrol. Now, it gets a three-cylinder 1.0 Litre engine along with the earlier 1.0 Litre MPI unit.

Volkswagen Polo Facelift Review

Volkswagen sold 1,126 units of Polo for the month of May, making it the third best selling car in the premium hatchback class. The first up is obviously Maruti Baleno, followed by Tata Altroz. Usually, Polo would be towards the end of this list battling out with Ford Freestyle, Honda Jazz and Toyota Glanza. This time, it managed to overtake all of them.

Volkswagen Polo has always remained one of the lowest performers of this segment because of its low practicality. It is a complete auto enthusiast’s car; great in driving and sporty to look at. However, it is smaller than other hatchbacks in this segment and offers comparatively lower features.

One of the biggest reasons why people defer from buying a VW car is the high maintenance. Most of the owners have complained against the expensive spare parts. In an interview a couple of months back, VW confirmed that they are working towards it and will reduce the ownership costs by 15-20%, overall.

Talking specifically about the BS6 Volkswagen Polo, it gets a 1.0 Litre turbo unit that produces 110 PS and 175 Nm of peak torque. The 7-speed DSG gearbox is no longer available and instead, it gets a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed torque converter AT. The new engine is more powerful and quicker, doing 0-100 kmph sprint in just 9.95 seconds.

Features onboard include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, rear parking sensors, cruise control, automatic rain sensing wipers, auto headlamps, flat-bottom steering wheel and much more.
