Honda has discontinued the CVT gearbox variants and VX and ZX trims of the older forth-gen City in order to create a comfortable gap in terms price with the new fifth-gen City. The forth-gen City is now priced between Rs 9.91-10.66 lakh.
It’s already common news that even with the launch of the new fifth-gen City, Honda will still be selling the previous, forth-gen City along side the new car. Of course being sold with the new City, Honda would have certainly rationalized the older model’s lineup and so far, we saw the old-gen City lose its diesel engine. Now we have more information on what the variant line-up of the older-gen City looks like along with the powertrain options that remain.
Honda had to discontinue the diesel engine on the older City as it was necessary to maintain a comfortable price gap with the new model and updating the diesel engine for BS6 compliance would have nullified that gap. Honda does however offer the BS6 complaint version of the same 100hp, 1.5L diesel engine from the older City on the new City as well as on the Amaze and the WR-V.
As for the petrol engine, the fifth-gen City gets a 1.5-litre DOHC, i-VTEC petrol engine, while the older City continues with the BS6 complaint version of the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, single-cam engine. This engine produces 119hp and 145Nm of torque and until now, came mated to either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 7-step CVT automatic gearbox. Honda has however now discontinued the CVT gearbox option from the older City which was prices between Rs 12.01-14.31 lakh.
In case you are looking for an automatic gearbox option with the City, you will have to opt for the new-gen model and the CVT variants are priced between Rs 12.20 – 14.45 lakh. Its actually not a huge premium over the older car and you get a lot more kit for your money. When Honda launched the BS6 complaint forth-gen City earlier this year, it was available in four variants – SV, V, VX and ZX – and was priced from Rs 9.91 to Rs 14.31 lakh.

With the coming of the new City, Honda has now had to discontinue to top two trims – VX and ZX – of the older City in order to prevent overlapping of prices between the two cars. Thus, with discontinuation of the top two trims and also the automatic variants, the forth-gen Honda City is now only available in two trim options with just one powertrain option – the BS6 1.5L SOHC i-Vtec petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Prices for the old City thus now start at Rs 9.91 lakh for the base trim and go up to Rs 10.66 lakh for the mid-spec trim.

Prices for the new-gen City then start from Rs 10.90 lakh for the entry-level, petrol-manual V variant. That’s about Rs 24,000 more expensive than the older City but it gets new, more powerful petrol engine along with a 6-speed manual gearbox and a lot more features too. For Rs 24,000 extra, you get features like side airbags, traction control, ESC, hill-start assist, a tyre pressure monitor, projector headlights, a part-digital instrument cluster, adjustable rear headrests and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with the fifth-gen City V trim that are not available on forth-gen City V trim. It remains to be seen how Honda’s plan of selling both the models together materializes in the market.
