Mahindra has finally unveiled the new generation 2020 Thar in India, which is scheduled to go on sale very soon.
After spying it enumerous times on the road and after various assumptions and speculations, we finally have the new Mahindra Thar in form. The manufacturer has taken the wraps off the off-roader today, on Independence day. We will be having a brief moment with the Thar soon, so stay tuned for our video today!
Most of the details regarding the SUV have been revealed. Starting off, it will come in two versions – AX and LX. AX variants will focus more on off-roading while the LX variants will be for those who want a lifestyle SUV. If you want to buy the AX variant, you will get a soft top as standard fitment. However, if you choose the LX version, you can either go for a hard top or a convertible.

Powering the new Thar is a 2.0 Litre petrol engine that produces 150 BHP and 320 Nm of peak torque and a 2.2 Litre turbodiesel engine that is good for 130 BHP and 320 Nm of peak torque. Both the engines get a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed torque converter AT. However, the automatic transmission only comes on the LX version.
Structural changes to the Thar include a new body structure which is safety compliant, Mahindra’s third gen body-on-frame chassis and independent suspension setup. There’s mechanical locking at the back and brake locking at the front, for a safer adventure. Also, there’s a 4X4 low range transfer case as standard fitment.
On the outside, there’s a completely different look and Thar now seems to be more rugged and rich. On the inside as well, there’s a lot of changes done. First, there is a completely new dashboard theme with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Real Time Adventure Statistics, cruise control, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED DRLs, Tyre Tronics, Tyre Direction Monitoring System and roof mounted speakers.

Talking about the seating options, the AX variants will get two front-facing and four side-facing seats, making it a 6-seater. The LX variants will come as a 4-seater as standard with all front-facing seats. Lastly, talking about the safety bits, it will get dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors with a camera, ESP with rollover mitigation, Hill Hold and Hill Descent Control.
The launch is scheduled to happen on 2nd October, which is another important day for us Indians. The prices will be announced on that date and official bookings will also commence then. We expect the prices to commence from Rs 8 Lakhs onwards going up to Rs 13 Lakhs (ex-showroom).
