Hyundai Teases Updated Kona and Kona N Line SUV; India Launch a Possibility?

Hyundai has dropped a couple of new teaser for what seems like a mid-life facelift for the Kona along with an N Line variant for the first time. Considering the Kona EV already sells in India and that Hyundai will bring the N Line brand to India, these could be on the cards for an India launch as well.

Hyundai has dropped a couple of teasers of what seems to be a mid-life facelift for the Kona in the international markets. Although the Hyundai Kona is solely sold as an EV here in India, the Kona has been available with a range of IC engines in several markets abroad since 2017. And this is the very first makeover the Kona is receiving since then. Hyundai has even teased a spicier N-Line variant of the Kona and from the looks of it, the upgrades are quite comprehensive indeed.

These teaser images clearly hints that Hyundai has adopted the Sensuous Sportiness design philosophy for the Kona facelift, as has been the norm with every modern Hyundai. The face of the Kona is now more aggressive than before and perhaps not as quirky as it used to be, but now, it certainly fits Hyundai’s model lineup better. The face gets an all-new bumper with skid plates, new grille, and a rather cool looking set of split headlamps with LED DRLs. The new headlamp setup really gives the SUV a very sophisticated look.

This is also the first time that the company has added an N Line variant to Kona lineup and naturally, the sportier variant gets even more aggressive styling. The grille gets a mesh design while the front bumper is different with larger air intakes. A closer look will also reveal that the Hyundai logo in the N Line variant has been shifted from the hood to the grille and there are three additional air vents where the logo would have been normally. Hyundai says that the nose of the new Kona is actually shark-inspired.

The Kona N Line is actually gets a more aerodynamic design complemented by corner fins and lean crease lines. Hyundai hasn’t revealed any other specific details about the new Kona yet. Under the hood, the new Kona could continue with its 1.0-litre turbo-petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engines in the international market. Meanwhile, the Kona N Line could be powered by a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine that produces 201PS and 264Nm of torque. This engine was recently introduced on the 2021 Elantra N Line.

Hyundai is expected to debut the two new Kona SUVs by the end of this year in South Korea. You must then be wondering how is it relevant to our market here. Well, having introduced the electric Kona already in India, Hyundai could be looking at bringing the standard SUV to our shores in the future given how popular SUVs are becoming in our market. Moreover, Hyundai will also introduce the N Line brand here in India soon and so, the Kona N Line isn’t completely out of the cards either. What better way to introduce the sporty N Line brand than with a SUV, isn’t it? The irony though!
