The explosion in Beirut has left numerous businesses and homes completely destroyed including this Audi dealership with tall towers with shattered glass in the background. The image is gravely saddening.
Lat week, videos of a massive explosion at the Beirut port in Lebanon went viral on the internet and 2020 had yet another huge tragedy under its name. The explosion which was caused by 2,700 tonnes of ammonium nitrate has left the city completely devastated with numerous people injured and also homeless. This demolished building that you see below is an Audi dealership in Beirut that’s been reduced to rubble in the explosion. The tall tower standing behind with completely shattered glass walls are a sad testimony to the extent of the destruction.
This image was shared by Hildegard Wortmann – Member of the Board of Management of Audi AG for Marketing and Sales – on social media. She further revealed in her post that while the employees at the dealership are safe, many of them have lost their homes in the explosion. Its not just this Audi dealership but all other businesses in and around the port have completely lost their establishments due to the blasts.
In a post on social media, Hildegard Wortmann wrote, “It is with great sorrow that I wish to express my deepest sympathy to our Audi team in Beirut and to everybody there who is suffering from this unbelievable tragedy. I have been in contact with Nabil Kettaneh, who is our Audi importer and partner in Beirut, immediately the morning after and so grateful to hear that everybody is safe while our dealership has been completely destroyed. Many of our team have lost their homes and their families have been impacted. Your grief is the grief of the whole Audi family worldwide. Our thoughts and compassion are with you and the victims’ families. May strength and confidence be with you!”

There are several images and videos on the internet showing the extent of destruction to the homes and cars around the city. Here are few more images which show a dealership parking lot in the City with damaged Audi vehicles that were ready to be delivered to the customers. Several other automakers in the area too have suffered similar amount of losses with carmakers like Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Suzuki, Ford and Seat taking to social media to show their support.

By the extent of damages caused by the explosion, it has been estimated to be worth about $10 billion so far and the number is only expected to go higher, according to a report by Bloomberg. As of August 11, death toll stands over 200 while 110 people are missing and over 6,000 people are injured. It has also left about 2,00,000 people homeless or with homes with shattered doors and windows.
