Reports suggest that soon smaller Maruti cars like Swift, Dzire, Baleno and Vitara Brezza might be offered with a factory-fitted CNG kit as an option.
By discontinuing diesel engines on small cars, many prospective buyers are now shying away. If there is a small diesel car under 7-8 Lakhs, it will be very economical and practical too. However, Maruti has small CNG cars to offer which will make up for the reduced costs. Currently, the company has about 5 CNG cars in the stable including Alto 800, S-Presso, WagonR, Celerio and Ertiga.
Maruti was also one of the first ones to announce that in the BS6 era, they will not be having any diesel cars. By the end of last year itself, most of their diesel cars were discontinued. The last ones to go were the Brezza and S-Cross, which was still available this year. Now, along with Maruti, there are many manufacturers who have done so.

While diesel cars are very fuel efficient and torquier than petrol units, CNG cars are even more efficient. In comparison, the power production is lower and you might sometimes be itching for additional power in a CNG car. Both of them have their advantages and disadvantages.
Many potential diesel buyers have complained about the unavailability of Maruti diesel cars. To make up for that empty space in the lineup, Maruti is planning to bring in more CNG cars. Atleast for the smaller under 4 Metre cars. This will allow buyers to either go for powerful petrol engines or less powerful but more efficient CNG cars.
In the coming months, cars like Maruti Vitara Brezza, Swift, Baleno and Dzire might be offered with a factory-fitted CNG kit. In such case, Maruti will be the first one to offer a CNG subcompact SUV. Many buyers can even think of stretching their budget which will have comparatively lower daily running costs.

As for the bigger Maruti cars, they might get the 1.5 Litre DDiS 225 diesel engine. It debuted on the Ciaz and was later seen on the Ertiga as well. However, Maruti discontinued the engine due to BS6 norms. Bigger cars like Ciaz, S-Cross, Ertiga and XL6 might get the 1.5 Litre diesel unit, probably by next year.
