Tata HBX-based Micro-SUV Will Likely be Called the Timero in India!

Tata Motors has filed a trademark for the name ‘Tata Timero’ in India and we believe that is what’s going to be the name of the upcoming production-spec HBX-based micro-SUV. Its scheduled for a launch sometime next year.

Tata Motors have filed a trademark for the name ‘Tata Timero’ in India. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s database reveals that the trademark was filed for last year and it has just been approved this September 2020. Tata Motors has two upcoming SUVs lined up for a launch in India – 7-seater version of the Harrier to be called the Gravitas and a micro-SUV based on the HBX concept showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo. It is thus very likely that the production-spec HBX micro SUV could be called the Tata Timero.

The Tata HBX or let’s say Timero will be the second car to be based on the ALFA platform after the Altroz premium hatchback. The ALFA scalable platform has been designed with electrification in mind and it can be adapted into a variety of body styles including hatchbacks, sedans, and SUVs. The Tata HBX (or Timero) measures 3,840mm in length, 1,822mm in width and 1,635mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,450mm. To put this size in perspective, the HBX is roughly the size of a Maruti Suzuki Swift, only slightly wider and quite a bit taller on account of being an SUV.

Pratap Bose, Vice President of Global Design at Tata Motors, had said at the Auto Expo that the HBX is almost 97% production ready. Most of what we saw on display will be what makes it to production, of course sans the knobby tires and roof rack. While we have seen several spy photos of the upcoming SUV, they were all heavily camouflaged. Based on the spy shots, the production-spec car seems considerably toned down from the concept at the Auto Expo but we hope the details on the production-spec car are close to the concept.

Earlier spy shots had also revealed the interiors of the production-spec HBX. And from the looks of it, there seemed to be even lesser changes on the inside than the outside. What’s not there on the production car are some of the fancy details we had seen on the concept, like the gold accents on the dashboard. The squarish central AC vents have been retained and so has been the flat-bottomed steering wheel. The dashboard layout and design also look identical to that of the concept. Your equipment list includes features like a part-digital, 7.0-inch instrument cluster, the steering-mounted audio controls, automatic climate-control system and free-standing infotainment system.

The Tata HBX (Timero) will be a petrol-only micro-SUV. It will be powered by a 86hp, 1.2-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that currently also powers the Tiago, the Tigor and the Altroz. The engine is expected to be mated with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox. There will be no diesel engine on offer. The prices for the HBX are expected to be in the range of Rs 4.5-7.5 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price point, the Tata HBX will be up against the Maruti Ignis, Ford Freestyle, and Mahindra KUV100.
