Jaguar land Rover is working with Econyl nylon to develop high-quality interiors for their next-generation cars. Interior trims, floor mats and even seat covers will be made with Enonyl fiber from recycled industrial plastic.
Waste management and sustainable development is one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century and with climate change fast grappling the world, the automotive industry has had to reinvent itself like no other. While electric mobility itself is once-in-a-century transformation that the automotive world is trying to adapt to, we have to think beyond what’s powering our cars to really overcome the environmental crisis. And that includes what we put inside our cars, or more importantly, where we put ourselves in our cars.
Jaguar Land Rover have said that the interiors of the next-generation Jaguar and Land Rover models will be made from ocean and landfill waste. JLR is working with Econyl nylon to develop high-quality interiors for their next-generation cars. Interior trims, floor mats and even seat covers will be made with Enonyl fiber from recycled industrial plastic, fabric offcuts from clothing industry, fishing nets from the farming industry, and also those wandering about in the ocean – known as ‘ghost nets’.
This Econyl regenerated nylon fiber has been created by a company called Aquafil. In fact, this material has already been used by several high-end fashion, sportswear and luxury watch brands to create backpacks, handbags, swimwear and watch straps. Aquafil reclaims nylon waste from all around the world and in just one single year, the company recycles as much as 40,000 tonnes of waste. Recycling this waste reduces the global warming impact of nylon by 90%, compared to materials produced from oil.

The resulting Econyl regenerated nylon polymer has the same chemical and performance characteristics as raw fossil material. This allows it to be processed into a fiber for carpet flooring and textiles. The yarn of Econyl nylon can then be used to manufacture things such as floor mats and seat covers for next-gen Jaguar and Land Rover models. The idea is to use environmentally conscious and sustainable materials while still being able to deliver customers a premium product as is expected of the brand.

Jaguar Land Rover is however not the first manufacturer to use sustainable materials for their interiors. Porsche has already done that with the Taycan, and that also being an EV, it takes the environmental issues quite seriously. The Tyacan uses quite a bit of recycled materials for its interiors and so will many other cars in the future. The definition of luxury in the automotive world currently is by the finest leather. However, as we have learnt, animal products are not only unsustainable, but also greatly contribute to global warming. A lot is going to change in the future and this seems the right steps forward.
