A new spy shot gives us a look at the face of the next-gen Mahindra XUV500, particularly the new headlights, and we are already drooling. These are like nothing we have seen on any Mahindra, certainly one of the most radical.
Following closely on the foot steps of the Mahindra Thar, it is now the next-gen Mahindra XUV500 that is making headlines for all the right reasons. We had been spoilt with spy images of the Mahindra Thar for over a year and the same is now happening for the next-gen XUV500. The next-gen XUV500 has already made news with its Mercedes-like interiors with reports even claiming that it will be the most affordable car in the Indian market with advanced driver assistance technologies. Now, a fresh spy image of the next-gen XUV500 has surfaced on the internet and it gives us a look at its face, particularly the new headlights, and we are already drooling.
This production-spec test mule of the upcoming Mahindra XUV500 gives us a glimpse at a few more final design details of the upcoming SUV. The new headlamps are rather huge and one of the most radical looking we have seen in a while. These however have been very tastefully designed. These new headlamps do not even resemble the one on the XUV300, with the C-shaped DRLs starting from the headlamp assembly and extending all the way down to the front bumper. These headlamps are however featuring halogen bulbs which means it could be a mid-spec variant. Top-spec variants could very well come equipped with full-LED headlamps.
The seven-slat Mahindra grille has also been revised and is more upright than before. Other new design details include a new 5-split-spoke alloy wheels. Although we still haven’t seen an uncamouflaged shot of rear, it features wrap around tail lamps with LED elements. The other big revelation about the upcoming XUV500 was the new Mercedes-Benz like twin digital screens comprising the digital driver’s display and infotainment system. The infotainment system will also be controlled via a swivel wheel, taking the premium intentions a notch up. The interiors will sport a dual-tone black and beige theme – another first for the XUV500 – and it will also continue with its three row seating arrangement.

As for the aforementioned advanced driver assistance systems, Mahindra has partnered with a South Korean company called Mando Corporation, who are set to supply a DCU (domain control unit), radar, and camera for ADAS. Spy images of the next-gen XUV500 have clearly shown provision for cameras and radar-based ADAS, incorporated into the top of the windshield along with sensor housing mounted low in the bumper. While exact details on the ADAS system is scarce currently, it will be Level 1 autonomous tech if anything at all. It will come with features such as drowsiness detection, blindspot detection, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Under the hood, the next-gen XUV500 will come powered by a 2.0L turbo-petrol engine from the mStallion family and the 2.2L mHawk diesel engine, both of which debuted on the recently launched Mahindra Thar. However, both these engines are expected to be mcuh more powerful on the XUV500, producing near about 200PS of power. Transmission options will include both manual and automatic gearboxes. Likely to be launched in the first half of 2021, the new XUV500 is expected to be priced from Rs 13-19 lakh. It will rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Harrier and MG Hector.
