MG Gloster Introductory Price Period Over; Price Hiked By Rs 1 lakh!

The entry-price of the MG Gloster has gone up by Rs 1 lakh while the top-end trim see a marginal hike in price. Its still priced at par with the competition and remains extremely good value for money for what it has to offer.

MG Motors launched the Gloster flagship SUV earlier this month for a starting price of Rs 28.98 lakh and going up to Rs 35.38 lakh for the top-end trim. These prices however were only introductory prices and now, MG Motors have hiked the price of the Gloster by up to Rs 1 lakh. The introductory prices were only valid for the first 2000 units or until October 31. It was previously expected that the MG Gloster would be the most expensive SUV in its segment but MG Motors hocked u with a pretty competitive pricing. Even with this price hike, the Gloster remains a very good value for money product.

Old Prices New Prices Difference
Super 7-seater Rs 28.98 lakh Rs 29.98 lakh Rs 1 lakh
Smart 7-seater Rs 30.98 lakh Rs 31.48 lakh Rs 50,000
Sharp 6- / 7-seater Rs 33.98 lakh / Rs 33.68 lakh Rs 34.28 lakh / Rs 33.98 lakh Rs 30,000
Savvy 6-seater Rs 35.38 lakh Rs 35.58 lakh Rs 20,000

As you can see from the table, it is the base-spec Super variant that sees the maximum price hike of Rs 1 lakh while subsequent higher variants see marginal increase in price. The top-spec Savvy variant sees the least hike in price of just Rs 20,000. Even after this price hike, the Gloster continues to be priced at par with the Ford Endeavor while the Toyota Fortuner is a little more expensive, for for its entry-level and top-spec trim. The Mahindra Alturas G4 continue to be the mot affordable full-size seven-seater SUV in the country.

The MG Gloster is available with a 2.0L diesel engine in India in two states of tune. The first features a single turbocharger and produces 163hp and 375Nm. The higher-spec engine comes with twin-turbochargers and produces a much healthier 218hp and 480Nm. Both the engines come mated to an 8-speed gearbox as standard. The lower-spec engine is offered with two-wheel drive only while the high-spec engine comes with shift-on-the fly four-wheel drive with selectable drive modes. Numbers aside, the engine on the Gloster does not feel the most energetic and 8-speed automatic gearbox is really slow to react. That really robs the SUV of a lot of performance you’d expect with such high numbers.

The real selling point of the Gloster is its expansive features list and that even includes advanced driver assistance systems. Its segment-first level-1 autonomous safety features include autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assist, forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control as well. It’s also very well appointed on the inside with a premium feeling cabin and good quality materials with a lot of tech. The other biggest highlight of the Gloster is its humongous size and with it comes an enormous cabin, the largest and roomiest cabin you will find in this segment.

Frankly, there’s no escaping the sheer size of this vehicle. It is the longest SUV in its class and only narrower than the Mahindra Alturas G4 but it is also the tallest of the lot. If making a statement with your car is important to you, none will do it better than the Gloster. Even with its introductory pricing period over, the Gloster is very good value for money and gives you some attributes you will not find in its rivals. Yes, the powertrain is really not so good in terms of performance, but for all other thing, it gets the job done pretty well. If premium feel and features are your priority, the Gloster wins it easily. For everything else, the competition is still very strong.
