Sources suggest Tata could be announcing prices of the Altroz Turbo in November itself. Its meant to take the new Hyundai i20 head-on. The Altroz Turbo will be powered by a 1.2L turbo-petrol engine with 110hp and 140Nm.
After storming the sub-compact SUV segment with turbo-petrol engines, manufacturers are now making turbo-petrol engines mainstream in the premium hatchback segment. Originally, it was only the Volkswagen Polo that can with a 1.2L turbo-petrol engine in the BS4 era. Come the BS6 era, the VW Polo shifted to a smaller 1.0L turbo-petrol engine. Hyundai too will be launching the all-new i20 with a 1.0L turbo-petrol engine for the first time tomorrow. There’s another turbo petrol premium hatchback coming up and that’s the Tata Altroz.
We have already seen the Altroz turbo on tests several times before. Some sources say that Tata could be launching the Altroz Turbo this month itself. The Altroz Turbo will be powered by a 1.2L, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine which produces 110hp and 140Nm of peak torque. This is the same engine from the Tata Nexon where it produces 120hp and 170Nm of torque but has been detuned for the smaller hatchback. At launch, the engine will solely come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox but a DCT gearbox is expected to be added to the lineup later.
The Altroz Turbo also weighs quite light at 980kg. Most hatchbacks in this segment usually weigh just above 1000 kg or about 1100 kg. Given the added power, performance should be pretty sprightly. The Altroz Turbo however does not have class leading numbers. That would go to the Hyundai i20 with 120hp and 170Nm of torque from its upcoming 1.0L turbo-petrol engine. Even the Volkswagen Polo – the only existing turbo-petrol hatchback in this segment – produces 175Nm of torque from its 1.0L turbo-petrol engine.
We had previously also reported to you that Tata Motors will offer the turbo-petrol engine only on the higher specs of the Altroz. According to a leaked document that had surfaced before, the Altroz Turbo will come in four variants – XT, XT (O), XZ and XZ (O). It’s interesting to note that Tata will introduce a new XT(O) variant with the Altroz Turbo as its not offered on the standard petrol and diesel versions of the Altroz. The previously leaked document even gave us a glimpse of the expecting pricing of the Altroz Turbo and here’s a look at it.

The current petrol and diesel engines on the Altroz do not really live up to the potential of the hatchback. The Altroz has a fantastic ride-and-handling balance but it was a little let down by its engines. The new 1.0L turbo-petrol engine could finally spice things up and the Altroz could very well be one of the best driver’s cars in the segment. It already looks great and is decently equipped as well. While we are rooting for Tata to turn things around with the Altroz Turbo, here’s a quick look at how it stacks up against the VW Polo and Hyundai i20.
