Tata Takes a Dig on the Upcoming Hyundai i20 with the Altroz!

In the run up to the launch of the new Hyundai i20, Tata Motors has very smartly taken a dig on the upcoming hatchback with the Altroz on the occasion of Halloween. We wait to see if Hyundai responds to this in an even smarter way.

The Hyundai i20 is the first and original premium hatchback in the country and it is all set to make a comeback in its third generation on November 6. Since then, a lot more manufacturers have joined the segment and Tata’s Altroz has been the most recent addition in the premium hatchback segment. As Hyundai is prepping for the launch of the new i20, Tata Motors thought this to be the right moment to take a dig on the upcoming new i20, and that too on Halloween.

Its not very often that we find carmakers taking a dig on each other here in India. It is however used more commonly in international markets as a marketing tool. You must be aware of the famous Audi vs BMW billboard war. This is a little different as Tata Motors took a dig on the upcoming Hyundai i20 through a video on social media. The post read, “You can i the trick 20 times, but it’s the treat that you fall for.”

In this tweet, Tata smartly calls the new i20 a trick while the Altroz is the real treat, the gold standard. It remains to be seen if Hyundai comes up with a reply to this and if we can actually have a social media warfare, just as Audi and BMW did it up on the billboards. When Tata debuted the Altroz earlier this year, it wowed everyone with its stunning design, feature rich interiors and fairly good road manners as well. Unfortunately, Tata has not quite been able to make the mark with the Altroz in term of sale numbers.

As for the Hyundai i20, it has posted consistent sales numbers – just behind the Maruti Suzuki Baleno – even in the latter days of its second generation model. This is a very crucial segment for manufacturers as it continues to grow in terms of volumes and Maruti Suzuki dominates the space with the Baleno. Tata has also managed to garner a fair bit of customers in this segment but competition is tough here. This segment also faces competition from the sub-compact SUV space as price tend to overlap each other in certain cases.
