2020 Honda City Goes Hybrid Globally; Expected To Come To India Too!

2020 Honda City, in other Asian markets, has received a hybrid motor with a fuel economy of 27.8 kmpl. India launch expected as well!

Fifth generation Honda City was launched this year amidst the lockdown and received a very generous response in the market. It came with many upgrades including changes in platform, dimensions and lots of feature additions. First, it was launched in Thailand and later in India. Differences between these two versions is just found under the bonnet.

Now, Honda has introduced the full hybrid version of the new generation City in Thailand. From the outside, it does not get any difference except for the badging on the grille. The same badging can also be seen at the back. Inside the cabin, it looks the same with a couple of new features like Honda sensing technology, automatic brake hold and electric parking brake.

Major difference will be observed under the hood, where it will get a 1.5 Litre petrol engine with dual electric motors. The electric motors produce 109 PS and 253 Nm of peak torque, while the petrol engine produces 98 PS and 127 Nm. With the Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive, you are able to get the combined power of the electric motors and your internal combustion motor.

The claimed fuel economy of 2020 Honda City hybrid is 27.8 kmpl, which is nearly 10 kmpl higher than your regular City. Since its not a pure electric and Honda has already shown interest in bringing hybrid cars to India, we are expecting the City Hybrid in our country. It could be introduced in 2021 in a single top-end fully loaded variant.

In the market of Thailand, it is priced at around Rs 20.40 Lakhs, making it costlier than the India-spec top-end ZX Diesel model by around Rs 5 Lakhs! If a couple of extra safety and tech features are lost then probably it can demand a premium of Rs 1 Lakh over the current top-end model. Seeing the fuel efficiency figures, there might be buyers interested in the sedan now.
