Car Sales Report For February 2021 – Brief Overview!

The car sales figures for the month of February are out and the general trend is very promising. The Indian automobile industry is coming out of the woods and this month marks another positive step in that direction. The overall sales grew by over 23%, which is quite significant. Whereas in February of last year the total passenger cars sold in the country were over 2,50,000, the number grew to over 3,08,000 in the same month this year. This represents the growing need for personal mobility. Also, a slew of launches in just the first two months from various carmakers has propelled this surge in sales. Having almost all the new car launches delayed last year, this year will see additional carmakers and more new products in the market. We expect exciting times for our automobile industry this year. Let us glance through the overview of sales for major carmakers in the country.

Sales Report

Maruti Suzuki – 8.3% Growth

The biggest car manufacturer in the country continues to see strong sales in yet another month. The total number of cars sold by Maruti in February 2020 was just over 1,33,000 and in February of this year, this number has reached over 1,44,500. This marks a growth figure of over 8%. Maruti just launched the updated Swift and other launches planned for this year include Celerio, Brezza and maybe some more.

Hyundai – 29% Growth

The second-largest carmaker in the country also sees a massive 29% growth in sales for February. In February last year, it managed to sell just over 40,000 units, whereas, in the same month this year, it sold over 51,000 units. Hyundai launched the all-new i20 last year which was well received by the customers. Plans this year include a micro SUV, AX, an MPV to rival Ertiga and Alcazar, the 7-seat SUV based on Creta.

Tata Motors – 119% Growth

The homegrown carmaker has had an impressive year, to say the least. It has been setting sales milestones for itself month after month. With having products in almost all segments now and offering safety and new tech with its products, it is becoming very popular with the customers. In February of last year, Tata sold over 12,000 units in our market and in February 2021, it sold over 27,000 units, marking a whopping 119% growth. Tata launched Altroz iTurbo, Safari already and plans to launch the micro SUV, HBX (Hornbill) soon.

Kia – 6.8% Growth

One of the most successful new car brands in the country, Kia has been enjoying healthy sales figures just on the back of two products, essentially. The Seltos and Sonet have been driving the sales for Kia since their inception. Last year, Kia sold over 15,500 units and this year in February, it managed to sell over 16,500 units. Kia is also planning to launch an MPV in India soon.

Mahindra – 43% Growth

The other big homegrown carmaker also sees huge growth in sales figure on a YoY basis. February 2020 saw Mahindra sell over 10,500 units and February 2021 saw this figure jump to over 15,000, marking an impressive 43% growth in sales. This year is expected to be very interesting for Mahindra with new launches planned including, all-new XUV500, Scorpio, TUV300 and the electric version of its successful compact SUV, XUV300.

Toyota – 35.9% Growth

The Japanese carmaker also experienced a humungous growth in February sales of almost 36%. In February 2020, Toyota managed to sell just over 10,000 units in our market, whereas it sold over 14,000 units in the same month this year. Toyota saw a positive response for the Fortuner, which it launched recently. The sales are driven by Maruti-sourced products including Glanza and Urban Cruiser.

Renault – 25.7% Growth

Renault has seen huge growth because of its affordable range of products including Kwid, Triber and the new Kiger. The sales of the Kiger will be reflected in the coming months. In February 2020, Renault sold over 8,700 units and in February this year, it sold over 11,000 units, marking a 25.7% growth.

Honda – 28.3% Growth

Honda has also seen a healthy growth of 28.3% YoY. In February 2020, it sold over 7,200 units, whereas, in February 2021, Honda saw over 9,300 units. The volume drivers for Honda include its sedans, Amaze and City. Going forward this is most likely to continue. The speculations are also of launching the HR-V SUV in India.

Ford – 17.7% Decline

Ford is one of the few carmakers to have seen a decline in sales for February. Last year, Ford sold over 7,000 units, but this year it managed to sell only 5,775 units. This could be attributed to the cancellation of the Joint Venture with Mahindra and the lack of new products, therefore.

MG and Nissan – 214% and 312% Growth respectively

MG and Nissan have enjoyed huge success from their SUVs in India. MG launched the updated Hector family and the updated ZS EV recently. This propelled its sales from over 1,300 units in February 2020 to over 4,300 units in February 2021, marking a 214% growth in sales. Similarly, the compact SUV, Magnite has created a huge market for Nissan with over 4,200 units selling in February this year compared to just over 1,000 units the year before.

Volkswagen and Skoda – 524% and -32% Growth respectively

The co-operation of the two carmakers has started to yield positive results, although the products coming from the Joint Venture are about to hit the Indian automobile market fairly soon. VW sold over 2,100 units last month, compared to a mere 350 units in the same month the year before. Skoda on the other hand sold just 853 units last month compared to over 1,200 units in February last year. But the more exciting times for these carmakers are yet to come with products lined up for this year including VW Taigun and Vento and Skoda Kushaq.

Jeep – 65.6% Growth

FCA also saw growth in sales of 65.6% YoY with the updated Compass. Compass does have some loyal customers in the market and they have received this update very well. Last year, Jeep managed to sell a mere 666 units in February, whereas this year, the sales went up to over 1,100 units. Jeep has planned to launch 4 new products in India within 2 years, which might see the sales figures of Jeep rise further.
