The Sales Report for passenger cars in India for the month of April is out. The industry has seen a substantial decline in overall sales on a month-on-month basis due to the worsening situation due to the pandemic. The country is again in lockdown and all the industries and production facilities are shut down. Not to mention, the demand itself has been affected. Nonetheless, we have the data of sales in the month of April of the compact sedans in our market. We shall compare the sales figures to that of March 2021 to conclude how much the pandemic is affecting our industry. In April, the compact sedan segment has grown marginally from March 2021 around 3%. In both months, there were around 22,500 units of compact sedans sold in our market. Let us take a look at the individual products’ performance for April.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire – 14,073 Units
The segment leader by a mile, Maruti Suzuki Dzire, was solely responsible for ensuring that the overall sales of the segment don’t see a dip in April 2021 by selling over 14,000 units alone. Compared to March 2021, where Maruti sold around 11,400 units of the Dzire, Maruti marked a substantial 23% increase in sales which is a stark contrast to the way the other products have performed. The compact SUV segment might have taken some sales away from this segment, but there will always be cases to buy a sedan. This segment has been around for longer than the compact SUV and therefore, putting a strong resistance to the domination being imposed by the compact SUV segment. Irrespective of how popular the compact SUV segment has become, the sedans continue to have their rightful place in the overall industry.
