Owner of 2 Month Old Mahindra Thar Reports Fading of Hard Top Trim

The new Mahindra Thar has hit the sweet spot with off-roading enthusiasts and SUV buyers alike with many putting their money on this vehicle for its great off-roading skills and the macho appeal it exudes. The demand for the new Thar has been very high since the day of its launch, so much so that the waiting period for this SUV extends to over a year for select variants. Meanwhile, most owners of this SUV have been quite satisfied with the purchase but there are some who have been bugged by some niggles. Case in the point here is one Gurjeet Singh, the owner of a Mahindra Thar who has pointed out how quickly the unpainted black plastic of his 2 month old car’s hard-top has started losing shine with the colour fading away.

Singh has mentioned that he didn’t hard water to wash his new Mahindra Thar and he used a car shampoo to keep his car clean. Several others who commented on his post pointed out that they’ve been facing a similar issue. It’s not uncommon for the black plastic trim of a vehicle to lose shine and start looking whitish over a period of time but what’s surprising here is that the Thar in question here is not even a year old. The plastic that must have had a deep shiny black colour on leaving the factory looks old and worn out in the pics we have above.

It’s natural for the unpainted plastic exposed to lose shine and colour and given the harsh climate in Delhi, it’s not completely surprising to see the black plastic hard top losing its newness so early. The fading of such plastic trim is inevitable over a period of time as the oils that the plastic contains degrade and lead to deterioration of the trim. Unlike painted surfaces, such exposed plastic doesn’t have a protective layer. Therefore, without any such coat, the plastic remains exposed to extreme weather conditions. One of the biggest cause of this damage, however, are the UV rays from the sun. Other than having a chalky appearance, over time, the affected plastic also gets brittle. Once again, we would like to point out that all of this is completely natural and can happen to any car but what’s surprising here is that many like Gurmeet are facing this issue within months of the delivery of their new Mahindra Thar.
