If Volkswagen India is anything to go by, 2021 will be the ‘year of Taigun’ because that is how high importance the upcoming C-SUV holds for its carmaker. Also, the above statement even reflects the kind of confidence that the carmaker has in its new baby. The VW Taigun is based on the MQB-A0-IN platform, which, it will share with none other than the recently introduced Skoda Kushaq. It will even share several other components with its Czech sibling but will look fairly different. Recently, a motorcyclist spotted an un-camouflaged test mule of the new model undergoing high-speed tests on a highway. Have a look at the video below and see for yourself if the new vehicle looks any better than the Kushaq.

The VW Taigun features a distinctly German design with taut surfaces and bold lines. It looks a fair bit like some of the bigger VW SUVs that are available in the international market. The front-end features bold LED headlamps with DRLs and an upper grille that has been splashed in chrome. Moving forward, the car has a rather flat bonnet, which should help the driver with a commanding view of the road. In the side profile, the 17-inch alloy wheels will once again remind you of the aforementioned VW SUVs. The rear-end is the one that certainly has the boldest styling element in the form of large-size LED taillamps with a light bar connecting both units. Thanks to this arrangement, the rear-end of the Taigun even ends up looking far busier than the clean posterior of the Kushaq with C-shaped LED taillamps.

The interior of the Taigun will be as well loaded as that of the Kushaq, which is a pretty good thing if you consider the many features that the new Czech C-SUV offers. This is something that will help the new VW pull some car buyers away from the feature-laden Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta. The cabin features a 10-inch infotainment unit that will support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the instrument cluster will be an all-digital unit. Other features will include My Volkswagen connectivity suite, Type C charging ports at front and rear, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, electric sunroof and multi-function steering wheel. The safety features on offer will include as many as 6 airbags on the top model, ABS with EBD, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Rear Park Assist, Hill Hold Control, Electronic Stability Control and ISOFIX child seat anchorage.

As is the case with the Skoda Kushaq, the VW Taigun will be a petrol-only model that will be available with two engine options – 1.0-litre TSI and 1.5-litre TSI. The former will output a maximum of 115hp and 175Nm, while the latter will offer 150hp and 250Nm. Transmission options for the smaller motor will include a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic units. The bigger motor will be sold with a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Prices are likely to be close to those of the Skoda Kushaq, which means it will cost Rs 10 lakh to Rs 17 lakh, ex-showroom. Other than locking horns with its own sibling, the Taigun will be seen locking horns with Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Harrier and MG Hector.
