Maruti Vitara Brezza CNG TO Be Least Powerful B-SUV; Specs Leaked

The sub-4-metre SUV segment shot to fame with the launch of the Ford Ecosport in 2012. The then one-of-a-kind offering brought good business to its carmaker until about mid-2015, when Maruti Suzuki India Ltd brought in the Vitara Brezza. Back in the day, the Maruti Vitara Brezza was a diesel-only offering and came with a Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre turbocharged motor. By the turn of the decade, however, the company switched to BSVI emission norms and replaced the oil-burner with a 1.5-litre petrol motor. Since then, the Brezza has been a petrol-only model that is often overlooked by those with a high usage simply because of the lack of a Diesel engine option. However, it now looks like the carmaker is closed to launching the Maruti Vitara Brezza CNG variant to make sense to those looking for low running costs.

The Maruti Vitara Brezza CNG is said to be just one of the handful of CNG cars MSIL had planned for the near future. Interestingly, the specifications of the upcoming model have allegedly leaked online recently. However, as is the case with all CNG offerings, the upcoming model will offer much lesser power and torque than the petrol version. In fact, save for the naturally aspirated petrol versions of the Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite, all other sub-compact-SUVs will turn out to be much more powerful than the Brezza CNG.

Powering the petrol Maruti Vitara Brezza is a 1.5-litre K-series naturally-aspirated petrol engine that goes on to output a maximum power of 105PS and a peak torque of 138Nm. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic unit. On the other hand, the CNG version will feature the same motor but in a different state of tune. It will go on to output a maximum power of 92PS and a peak torque of 122Nm. In all likelihood, the 5-speed manual transmission will be the only variant on offer. Also, as we’ve seen on other S-CNG cars from Maruti Suzuki, the Brezza CNG, in most likelihood, won’t be available in the top-spec ZXI+ trim. In fact, we’re not even sure if we would get the ZXI trim as the LXI and VXI seem to be the most obvious choices for the CNG variant. For now, however, there’s no data on the trim option and the availability or non-availability of automatic transmission.

In July 2021, the Maruti Vitara Brezza was the highest-selling model in its segment. It sold over 12,600 units in July 2021, which made it far more popular than the same month last year, when it could sell just 7,800 units. The launch of the Maruti Vitara Brezza CNG model is sure to help the carmaker find even more buyers.
