Reports reveal that MG is working on a new in-house diesel engine, that will power the upcoming Maxus D90 and 6-Seater Hector as well.
MG Motors is bringing the 6-Seater Hector and full-size Maxus D90 SUV to India soon. The 6-seater will be styled a bit different than the Hector. The Maxus D90 is an upcoming rival for Toyota Fortuner, Mahindra Alturas and Ford Endeavour.
Right now, the Hector uses an FCA-sourced 2.0 Litre turbo-diesel engine, that produces 170 BHP and 350 Nm of peak torque. Going by the suggestions and various comments about the Hector diesel being slightly underpowered, MG has better plans.
Reportedly, MG is working on an in-house 2.0 litre turbo-diesel engine for the 6-Seater Hector and the Maxus D90. With the addition of a third-row, the 6-seater version will definitely need more power on demand.

The new engine is under development and will be seen on the 6-seater Hector by 2022. While it will be launched next year itself, the engine will debut later. The 6-seater has already been spied a couple of time with some cosmetic changes.
The engine is capable of producing 218 BHP and 480 Nm of peak torque, thanks to the twin-turbo unit. With these power figures, the 6-seater Hector and Maxus D90 will be a perfect competitor amongst its rivals. The three-row Hector will go against Toyota Innova Crysta, demanding around 1-1.5 Lakhs over the regular Hector variants.
In the case of the regular Hector, the same engine might be carried on but not anytime soon. Although, MG could reduce the power figures for the Hector in the 170-200 BHP range, to keep the fuel efficiency in check.

Most likely, the upcoming MG SUVs will be showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo, in their production form. MG is going to launch the ZS EV next month, which will be priced around Rs 23 Lakhs.
