Toyota Might Discontinue The 2.8 Litre Diesel Engine On BS-6 Fortuner

Toyota has dropped the bigger 2.8-litre diesel engine from the Innova Crysta and the same could also be done for Fortuner, once the BS-6 engines are introduced.

Toyota has started its BS-6 launches with the Innova Crysta. The MPV was available in three engine options – a petrol and two diesel engines. BS-6 norms have forced Toyota to withdraw the bigger diesel engine from the Innova and we expect Fortuner to experience the same.

Toyota Innova came with the 2.8-litre diesel engine that was paired to a 6-speed AT only. On Fortuner, the same 2.8-litre diesel engine comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed AT. Once Toyota introduces the BS-6 Fortuner, it might ditch this engine for the less powerful 2.4 Litre diesel.

Also, the Fortuner 4X4 comes only with the diesel variant, which is expected to come on the other engine as well. The 2.8 litre engine on the SUV produces 174 BHP and 400 Nm of peak torque. With Fortuner losing out the torquey engine, we wonder if it will affect its sales.

In the Thai-spec Toyota Fortuner, there is a 150 BHP and 400 Nm producing 2.4 Litre diesel engine. Compared to Innova, the power figures are higher by 7 BHP and 40 Nm of torque. This engine is expected to come soon on the Fortuner, being BS-6 compliant from the start

Toyota Fortuner is also offered with a 2.7 Litre petrol engine which produces 166 PS and 245 Nm of peak torque. The petrol engine is also offered with options of a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed AT, but without 4X4 drivetrain.

With BS-6 incoming, the prices of Toyota Fortuner might also increase by a decent margin. As for the Innova Crysta, its petrol variants are costlier by Rs 43,000 and the diesel variants by Rs 1.43 Lakhs. The diesel variants now go up to Rs 25 Lakhs (ex-showroom).
